Idaho group wants all wolves in the state exterminated |
|
www.wilderness-sportsman.com (news section)
"COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho (AP) -- An anti-wolf group wants to put an initiative on the ballot to remove wolves from the state "by any means possible."
Wolves have been controversial in Idaho since the federal government reintroduced 15 of the animals in 1995, decades after they had been killed off in the state. Some hunters say the wolves diminish deer and elk populations, while some ranchers say wolves put their livestock at risk.
The group launching the initiative, the Idaho Anti-Wolf Coalition, is tired of seeing wolves treated better than humans, Ron Gillett, head of the coalition, told The Spokesman-Review."

12. Utah beat them by a point BUT I think that Idaho is more red |
|
Edited on Tue Feb-07-06 10:26 PM by Hippo_Tron
Believe it or not, Utah has a fully functioning democratic party. They have a dem congressman and the dem candidate for Governor was very competitive, only losing by a few points even though the race was held during a presidential election year.
Idaho, on the other hand, doesn't really even have two parties. The thought of a democrat being elected to any major office in Idaho is laughable.
It's really a shame too, because Idaho once had a great democratic senator named Frank Church. Church lead the committee that exposed the abuses committed by the FBI including the threats made on Martin Luther King's life. Given the current situation it woudld be great if we had him in the senate today.

We just got our red wolf population up in my state through a co-operative effort. I didn't imagine there was another state somewhere trying to exterminate them.

"Sounds like some seriously crappy hunters." Seems like if these hunters are not able to kill an elk/deer, they blame it on the wolves who can.

Just how obscene these people are.
The ecological non-sense of this groups comments notwithstanding I was interested in this quote: "Wolves treated better than humans?" by Mr. Gillett ... I want this idiot to show me any proposal in existence tht promotes the extermination of the entire population of any one state's humans.

17. The wolves that were introduced to Yellowstone some |

years back have been making their way into Colorado. Colorado's so crowded now that I fully expect an outcry similar to this one soon.
If I remember correctly, one indication of their migration into Colorado was that one was found dead on a freeway.

22. I can tell you that most Idahoans don't agree with this group |
|
Most of Idahoans probably don't agree with many of us here at DU either, but there is a center point where I think most Idahoans are at.
The problem occurs when small ranchers who graze on their own land lose cattle to wolves, and have little recourse, either against the wolf or financially. The large corporate ranchers who suck off the federal teat (all the while complaining about "welfare queens") are the ones pushing for wolf extermination, simply because they don't give a shit about the land or wildlife. They care only about money. The small, family owned ranches don't use the gov't land, and complain less, because they live here, and understand the bigger picture. I agree that these small-timers need a way to deal with the issue. That's part of the reason the feds turned over management of the wolf program to our state Fish & Game Department.
I can almost guarantee that the extermination idea won't happen. I think there is a good chance that many wolves will be relocated, though.

26. Ignorance breeds fear of wolves |
|
If Idahoians really knew how beneficial wolves can be they would take a stand against such actions. It is the same ignorance and fear that keep them voting for the Republican party. It would be wise for the democratic party to stand up in Idaho and educate people on the wolf issue. If people start hearing the truth they often open their mind to learning more of the truth instead of getting wrapped up in fear. I am sorry for the wolves and the people of Idaho.

I worked with a Couer D'laine woman for a while. She was cool. Idaho must be shamed before the rest of the West for even considering such treacherous pillaging of the nation's natural treasure. Preparations should begin for a tourist Boycott if it even begins to move foward. God forbid these motherf*ckers hire o goddamn shepheard with good dogs and the cattleman can hire cowboys to patrol their herds. No, they would rather sterilize the land and go monoculture meat, and expect no losses with no more investment than barbed wire fencing. whew ! it just poured out.

31. We in Idaho are used to this type of group |
|
Anti-wolf/grizzly bear sentiment is nothing new here. Hell, anti-salmon feelings can even run high when our blessed Snake River dams are threatened. "Environmentalist" and "Leninist" are equally interchangeable terms here for many. Despite the fact that Idaho's greatest asset is its vast collection of natural landscapes, for many in the resource-extraction businesses, timber, mining, and ranching trump Mother Nature. Wolves are viewed in precisely the same light as household mice: a destructive pest to be dealt with as quickly as possible. Nevermind that they provide as integral a function to a healthy forest as does an occasional fire: what they do not kill, they make stronger.
It doesn't generally help that almost all of our state legislators come from the above farm/ranch/timber/mining areas. Molly Ivins would have a field day (or decade) here.
