1. Evely Harris sang that at the protests in Washington...
I saw that video over and over again. Sopowerful! The link doesn't work any more, unfortunately.

2. one night long ago, when I was working on the Clearwater project . . .
with Pete Seeger, he and I and a few others decided to drop by the boat, which was docked nearby, to see how things were going . . . a couple of people were on deck strumming guitars . . . before you knew it, instruments were coming out all over the place (seems lots of folks on the crew played something or other), and this moonlight sing-along/hootenanny began, with everything from banjos to fiddles to harmonicas . . . and everyone was singing -- even me, though my ability to carry a tune is very questionable . . .

for some reason, one of the songs we got into that night was "Down By The Riverside" . . . I was next to Pete, who was strumming his banjo, and different people were taking different verses . . . at one point, just as Pete finished his verse, he turned to me with a big grin and said "You take one" . . . I honestly thought I was going to shit . . .

I have no idea what verse I sang, or how bad it was . . . but it was loud, and everyone joined in on the chorus . . . great memories, though, from a great evening . . . :)

4. That must have been absolutely great. An experience which you shall
never forget.

Nominated - because it's more important than ever.

5. I sometimes wonder if the folksong movement of the sixties
needed to go hand-in-hand with lots of dope-smoking so no one would care how bad the singing was. ;-)

6. C'mon...great singers move the heart. With ordinary people
it's much more important to be singing at all than to sing well. Singing is good for everybody... and much, much much better than just consuming what others sing :)

I come from a family where there was always singing (German folksongs) - while dishwashing, before the open fire at night, painting a room -always. I greatly regret I hardly ever find anybody to sing with today. And I'm not a good singer at all, unfortunately :)

9. when everone sings together, the sound is beautiful and glorious
it's not about being doped up and dumbed down, it's about throwing your heart and soul into it.

14. Pete always said "I don't have the greatest voice, but
I can sure sing loud -- and so can you!" . . .

8. I love music sessions like that... wish the world loved it too..
Sweet Honey and the Rock recorded a great version of this song, and i recommend that you get a copy of that - it is so awesome.

This is an old song, i think it's a black hymnal but i'm not sure...

it needs to be song through the roof tops right now with all the saber rattling going on, and this never ending war in Iraq.

3. Nominated .....
Now if we could get 10,000 DUers to sing that song at 10:38 am/est today, we would be shaking hands across the USA.

Thanks!

7. Kick...that song should be sung everywhere, at all times and opportunities
Its so beautiful a means of opposition mainly because it's a-political,really... and established. And everybody who hears it NOW will automatically give it the new meaning. Hell, start singing, I'll pick it up on this side of the globe! :)
