This little light of mine - pix heavy
Edited on Wed Feb-08-06 11:50 AM by Sydnie

This little light of mine
I'm going to let it shine

Oh, this little light of mine
I'm going to let it shine

Hallelujah
This little light of mine
I'm going to let it shine

Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine

----

Ev'ry where I go
I'm going to let it shine

Oh, ev'ry where I go
I'm going to let it shine

Hallelujah
Ev'ry where I go
I'm going to let it shine

Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine

-----

All in my house
I'm going to let it shine

Oh, all in my house
I'm going to let it shine

Hallelujah
All in my house
I'm going to let it shine

Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine

---

I'm not going to make it shine
I'm just going to let it shine

I'm not going to make it shine
I'm just going to let it shine

Hallelujah
I'm not going to make it shine
I'm just going to let it shine

Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine

----

Out in the dark
I'm going to let it shine

Oh, out in the dark
I'm going to let it shine

Hallelujah
Out in the dark
I'm going to let it shine

Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine

13. This is a marvelous tribute in pictures. Thank you.
It's so hard at first when someone of her stature passes. We all neeed now to do the work, the heavy lifting which we thought only she could do. She was a pillar, a reliable presence, and now that she's gone, we need to carry on.

May we do such work for the cause of peace and justice that the names of Martin Luther King and Corretta Scott King are not forgotten, but resound for centuries to come in the halls of the institutions of freedom!

Was that last January - the one that started in Selma? With King, Jackson, and Clinton? Tell us more!

42. Actually, it was in March of 1999 or 2000. Clinton was still in office.
Edited on Thu Feb-09-06 12:30 AM by peacebaby3
They hold the event every year on the anniversary which is in March. At that time I lived on Hwy. 80 between Montgomery and Selma so I drove to Selma early that morning to march. That was a particularly big year because Clinton flew in to walk across the Edmund Pettus Bridge with all of the marchers. And yes, King, Jackson, and John Lewis (on the other side of Clinton) were all there that year. When I lived in the area, I used to attend almost every year. It's really cool to see the diverse crowd that now crosses the bridge.

It was amazing that year! I actually found out about Clinton coming early because I was working at the Alabama Democratic Party office at the time, but I was sworn to secrecy. It wasn't announced until just a few hours before he arrived because they were worried about crowds, etc. I got to shake Clinton's hand and say hello because of my connections with the state party, but it was very brief. I also got to shake Ms. King and Jessie Jackson's hands as well. I had met Jackson before when he spoke at my university. I also got to meet Rev. Joseph Lowery (he was not at the march). He spoke at my university also and actually came into one of my history classes and just spoke to the 15 or so of us in class.

I was also just a few miles from the memorial to Viola Liuzzo as well. While I lived there they declared and starting turning Hwy. 80 into an historical landmark for civil rights. I saw a lot happen over that 10 years. I did see some vandalism to her memorial which was horrible. They finally put a fence around it.

Edit: typo

48. You're very welcome! I will tell you unless something has changed,
the Voting Rights Museum in Selma is really, really small and not in very good shape. I think it has a hard time getting funding and is kept afloat by a few key supporters and volunteers. I've always worried that it might actually close one day.

I can't imagine the annual Selma to Montgomery March ever ending. That would be a sad day.

Thanks for your interest. If you are ever in that part of the country, you should walk or even just drive over the bridge. It's a rather short, older bridge, but it has an unexplainable magic when you are there. The town as a whole is poor, but there is some great history.

:)

43. Don't know why, but the two that struck me the most ...
Were the pictures of Coretta Scott King and Jimmy Carter together, face to face. The first is when they were young, and the next is when they were quite a bit older. I don't know why, but those really grab at the ol' ticker for me.
