Did you enjoy the funeral? Please share here... |
|
Edited on Wed Feb-08-06 01:09 PM by bliss_eternal
I know that sounds odd--one rarely really 'enjoys' a funeral. Isn't that a contradiction in terms? But for the black/African American culture it is, or should be, a celebration of the life that has just passed on. It's an opportunity to say goodbye, share fond memories and to share the many ways this person touched our lives.
Yes, there is mourning. There is sadness. But there is also joy that the person no longer has to suffer--that they have passed on and are more than their physical body here on earth.
There's been too much emphasis on the idiocy and reaction from the right to Coretta Scott King's funeral. So many of us truly enjoyed watching the service together on DU, evident by the many, many threads on the topic yesterday. It seems a shame to allow them to take this away and allow it to be diminished in any way.
So let's take a few moments to think about and share what we 'liked' about yesterday's service. Dare we even say enjoyed. I read on a thread this morning that one DU'er LOVED what he saw yesterday. Let's talk about THAT!
Was there a moment, song, speech that particularly moved you? Why? What made you happy about the celebration of Coretta Scott King's life?
Let's enjoy the memory of the glorious presentation and know that it really hasn't been diminished, unless we allow ourselves to think it was. It was beautiful, moving and grand--everything you would expect of a funeral for a Queen.
What did you enjoy most about it? :grouphug:

2. Maya was so beautiful! I enjoyed her as well-- |
|
her presence, even through television was so simultaneously captured strenght and elegance. Her singing voice was strong and the hymn she started and ended with--lovely, moving and appropriate.
I really enjoyed her remarks about she and Coretta calling each other 'girl.'

She instantly brought tears to my eyes and a smile to my face when she starting singing. What a love she is! And now that my grandmoms AND my mom are gone, I would like her to adopt me. She is so comforting and tranquil. :hi:

I'm *so* sorry that you lost your mom and grandmoms! I've always wished Maya was my family--she's so amazing. I'll never forget actually seeing her speak at my college. Standing room only.

|
there? I was sort of surprised that this Nobel prize winning kickass lady didn't speak.

3. I enjoy all the talk of peace. And the talk of trying to see through your |
|
anger - so you can accomplish change.
She lived these things every day of her life.

17. Again and again - that is what the funeral was about. Many expressed |

it in different ways. But peaceful transformation & fight was what she was about.

21. Yes, so it was appropriate to |
|
also share that she was against militarism. It is an unfortunate irony that we are presently at war, and that was mentioned, but only in the context of how it impacted her life and her work.

5. I loved everything in the service, the music, the speeches |
|
the display of emotion, the very, very clear love of Mrs. King that shone through the whole service and the promise to continue her work. It was very, very moving.

for at least an hour straight, I could not stop crying. Just as I would seem to stop, yet another wonderful speaker started to share and said something that went straight to my heart.
Thank you for sharing, Spazito! :hi:

10. You're very welcome! The Kings were admired around the |
|
world and I am very grateful the King family graciously shared their service for their mother with all of us by allowing in the cameras. They will, indeed, carry on in the tradition of their parents.

she was real, she had no agenda but love and a shared history. She was eloquent in the face of pain, just as Mrs. King had always been.
That being said, I enjoyed all of it. It really was a clear celebration of a great woman and her life.

13. I completely missed Miss Shabazz-- |
|
Darn CNN. While you were all posting about her, I was wondering what was going on, as CNN had cut to the news. It was strange and rather misleading. When they broke for commercials, they were saying,"...when we return, the funeral of Coretta Scott King."
Grrr--false advertising. I wish they had been more honest. I would have sought a different channel to view it on much sooner.

29. There were a lot of wonderful speeches, but I think this lady moved |

me the most also. I posted on another thread how odd it is that a really sincere sob, one from the heart, can almost bring you to your knees. She was, to me, the most moving.

But Maya made me cry and laugh at the same time!

16. I was moved by so much that I don't think I can pick a single instance |
|
Stevie Wonder was an inspiration (as he always is). I love the song he sang and I ended up singing and humming it to myself for the rest of the day. It was the last thought across my mind last night before I fell asleep.
Maya Angelou is always wonderous... Malcom's daughter... Jimmy Carter...
I was also very touched by Shirley Richardson, the mayor of Atlanta. Her words were not only a eulogy to Mrs. King, but a call to action for each of us.
The service would not have been complete without Dr. Height. She was amazing and will continue to be amazing long past her own death.

maybe that's why I haven't shared one particularly moment, but just shared with others as they post. It's too hard to pick one. So many moments--such a dynamic service. Sad because we hate to see her go, but so joyous! You can't even think about how sad it is, while you are taking in the magnificence of her life.

27. I even liked the elder Bush's comments |
|
I missed Gee Dub's comments and Ms. Bernice's comments got too preachy for my taste.
God love Pres. Carter and Rev. Lowry! They were brilliant.
Hill and Bill did great, but as usual the Corporate whores are blaming Bill for "hawking" Hill for Prez, when that idea came from the "audience".
And yes, Coretta's and Paul's (Wellstone), were political! Live with it , dittoheads and no brainer GOPers!

30. We started watching it because I wanted to show my wife the Good Rev |
|
and wound up watching for an hour or so. I hope it's replayed a bit more so I can catch the rest.
I loved it, very moving.
(Although, much as I HATE to say it - I thought the Clinton's did terrible. Poor Bill looked a bit off and acted kinda cocky. Hillary's not much of an inspirational speaker. I know, I know - I hate to say it.)

|
not sure if/when they will again. I know C-Span is featuring some shows on Coretta Scott King and another one on the history of the civil rights movement that I hope to watch.
Check their website, to see if they may air it again--they have one, don't they?
You're entitled to say what you did about the Clinton's. I loved seeing them there, and got emotional hearing the way they were recieved, but I can see how you would feel that Bill was slightly off his usual speaking game. ;)
