Thurogood Marshall - what an amazing guy |
|
Edited on Wed Feb-08-06 01:36 PM by LynneSin
I was waiting in line at the post office today and they had a poster for Black History Month with all the postage stamps they have done with African AMericans on it. The man focus of the poster though was Thurgood Marshall.
It just makes me ill how much our Supreme Court has changed since the years that Marshall was on the bench. He was someone that you knew represented the everyday people as he sat there on the highest court in our country. ANd it makes me ill that Reagan figured as long as he "replaced the color with the same" for Marshall's replacement that everything would be ok (Clarence Thomas replaced Marshall - the only thing these two have in common is that they are both African-AMerican and that's it).
So today I'm just a little sad as I look at the status of our Supreme Court. I do know the democrats put up a good fight to get that filibuster (and I think when they didn't have it they just told the dems to vote how it would best work for them). But now we have a Supreme Court that no longer represents regular folks like you and me.
BTW, I saw Marshall speak back in the late 80s when he received the Liberty Medal of Freedom which is given away each year on July 4th in Philly - amazing speaker. He had me crying!

5. Lynne, his name is Thurgood Marshall and Ronnie didn't appoint |
|
Clarence Thomas, Bush I did.
BTW, I didn't know that BWI was named after him. I would think it would be called Thurgood Marshall or just Marshall Airport.
As for National, it'll always be National to me as well.
We have a stretch of road here in Illinois that is sometimes referred to by someone whose name will not be mentioned, but to me it will always just plain ole I-88.

9. Hey, Lynne no big deal. Everyone has a bad day... |
|
Besides after all the organizing you did for the September 05 meetup/anti-war march in Washington, you're entitled to have "brain farts".
I know you've said you'd never take that on again, but I would love to have some sort of yearly DU nationwide meetup. Last September in Washington was a blast!!!!

10. We'll I'm doing something in NYC |
|
and i know you're going to be there.
I'd love to do it again but it's way too much hassle and sometimes a powergrab for who's doing what, how and why.
I think I'll just stick with the little get togethers with good friends like we'll have in NYC

11. Sorry Lynne, can't come to NYC. |
|
My niece, Erin, is getting married on February 18th. Can't miss a good, old fashioned South Side Irish/Chicago wedding.
Maybe a few of us can do something later in the spring/summer. I'd be game for that.
