Republican overseeer of NSA calls for full congressional probe

WASHINGTON (AFP) - A Republican lawmaker whose subcommittee oversees the National Security Agency has broken ranks with the White House and called for a full Congressional inquiry into the Bush administration's domestic spying program, a newspaper reported.

The The New York Times said Representative Heather Wilson (news, bio, voting record) of New Mexico, who chairs the House Subcommittee on Technical and Tactical Intelligence, said in an interview that she had "serious concerns" about the surveillance program.

Wilson, who was a National Security Council aide in the administration of President Bush's father, is the first Republican on either the House's Intelligence Committee or the Senate's to call for a full congressional investigation into the program, the paper said.

She said the House Intelligence Committee needed to conduct a "painstaking" review, including not only classified briefings but also access to internal documents and staff interviews with NSA aides and intelligence officials, according to the report.

Wilson, a former Air Force officer, said she realized that publicizing her concerns over the surveillance program could harm her relations with the administration, the paper pointed out.

"The president has his duty to do, but I have mine too, and I feel strongly about that," The Times quoted her as saying.

1. Ok - so does this mean they will have the congressional probe?
We should all write her and send her a thank you note for being a true American.

6. Just a bigger bucket of paint for the whitewash.
As much as I would love seeing Bushco tossed in the pokey they just saved their ass with Alito. You know this will end up in front of the Supreme Court and now with Alito, Scalia, Thomas, Roberts, and Kennedy the deal is done.

26. This doesn't go the way of the courts
This is within the purview of Congress. Punishment for acts of the president is impeachment. The trial is held in the Senate. Supreme Court won't even be involved, unless a separate special prosecutor is appointed to investigate criminal charges which he can be liable for even he is out of office.

But who cares, all we want is him OUT.

either as elected reps or staffers, etc. Hopefully Ms. Wilson has the NSA insider knowledge (or insider staff connections) to allow for the full 'blowback' effect to take place.

Most of these people ARE loyal Americans (duh, they took an oath to preserve protect defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic, just like someone else we know). Despite the infiltration and prevelence at the top of Knights of Malta members and other ultra conservative aristocrats, these whistleblowers can and MUST speak out about any secret programs a la Nixonian 'enemies lists' persecutions being done by the likes of Karl Rove and Company.

"The President of the United States has been breaking the law...."

Here is how they will accomplish their TIA ends:

Total Surveillance
http://www.motherjones.com/interview/2005/12/albrecht.h ...

Couple this insidious technology with purposely erroneous background checks

Who is checking the background checkers?
http://www.csmonitor.com/2005/1128/p13s02-wmgn.html

They've offshored, outsourced, and privatized TIA. Now all they have to do is fire you for being 'of the wrong political party' and put false information in your background data (ChoicePoint, anyone ?)...and voila ! You've just created the most insidious terror project in the US ever.

BTW, the current rightwingnut fascination is on a Jeff Session's aide
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x2092752
that should distract from the real issues, as much as their fascination with the latest blond to disappear in Aruba...

Maybe Sibel Edmonds could pose for Playboy ?

There's too much opportunity for this to be yet another whitewash. Maybe Wilson doesn't plan it that way now (tho I'm not convinced), but too much oppty for it to end up that way.

Edited on Wed Feb-08-06 01:42 PM by EVDebs
If not sworn in before Congressional testimony as a 'protection ploy', these administration officials all took Oaths of Office...

Plus a Democratically controlled House would still be able to bring charges and investigations even past '08. Let's go for the Senate too, btw ! If we don't go after the violations of the law NOW with a Republican-controlled legislative branch, the public will have to patiently wait for people who will...

Remember that Gonzales was NOT required to take an oath - and check out the second of these two related threads:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x2092969
thread title (2-7-06 LBN): NYT: Republican Who Oversees N.S.A. Calls for Wiretap Inquiry
Comment/excerpt: Rep. Heather Wilson. But remember, the GOPs saw to it that Gonzales was NOT under oath – so it doesn’t mean anything this way.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x360075
thread title (2-8-06 GD): BEFORE YOU GET EXCITED ABOUT HEATHER WILSON:
Comment/excerpt: SF Chron article showing that Heather Wilson is actually only doing WH damage control – she has been trying to change/undermine FISA.

I believe this is nothing other than grandstanding for the WH with the goal of spinning down the scandal over the traitorous NSA spy program. Her history on this issue speaks for itself.
