Face it folks, Rove stole the funeral and ate your lunch
And he did it by turning the media against two devoutly religious men, including a former President who works tirelessly for human rights. Bill Clinton, being wise to all things political, made himself and his wife untouchable; but the righteous indignation of men like Jimmy Carter and the good Reverend Lowery are, unfortunately, easy targets for the boy genius, who preys on the soft bigotry and hard partisanship pervasive in our media and our country.

Bush now gets to take the high road... having, once again, had his surrogates do his dirty work. He will appear before the cameras and at some point soon say he "appreciates freedom of speech". The media will be aglow with adulation for his ability to forgive and forget, and imply he should never have to face his critics again, especially African Americans.

When will our team figure out that theirs has absolutely zero scruples? Bush was not boxed in to attending the funeral. Rove saw a tremendous political opportunity to change the story... no matter that it was the funeral of Coretta Scott King. He can and will find a way to play the race card, the gay card, the cultural card of the day when given any opportunity, exploiting whomever he has to in order to seize the message.

I give you Max Cleland.
John Kerry.
Gay Marriage.
Immigration Reform.

Being decent people, it's sometimes hard to realize the answer to the question "at long last sir, have you no decency" is a resounding NO. It is long past the time we came to that conclusion.

It doesn't matter that we are right, it doesn't matter how outraged we get about this... unless you can overnight change the way people think (and so many still don't understand that funerals can actually be non-morbid events), we've lost this debate. So, rather than provide them with the echo chamber they desire, we should refocus our energy on the stories of the day that are penetrating through the cultural muck:

1) Domestic Wiretapping
2) Jack Abramoff/Tom Delay/Culture of Crony Corruption
3) Valerie Plame

I'm tired of them stealing things from me, including elections and funerals. We need the congress in '06.

We have work to do.

1. Our work starts with this:
Don't believe the media. This is the best tool the rwingers have, because so many have always relied on the news media to be fair. I've already convinced some folks that they need to look to the internet for a balanced view of the news.

BTW, I don't think Rove won. He made the media make it seem that way-but the celebration of the Truth by those at the funeral was a breath of fresh air, and a reminder that there are many of us out there, and that we are mighty because we are right!

The spin machine wants you to think the public believes this or that. The bottom line and what makes this so aggravating is that the public doesn't trust bush. It's all rovian bs - we've been hijacked every one of us.

12. May depend on where you live in the South
My boss has asked me about political information to talk with others about-he has said Bush needs to be tarred and feathered. A co-worker gave me "Loose Change" to watch, and listens to AAR here in the office when he comes in for a break (like he has a choice-I own the radio!). I've talked to clerks who disagree with Bush totally. This is northwest Arkansas, which is the most conservative part of the state.

I know my in-laws and friends from the South are not buying the BS. Maybe you shouldn't listen to THEIR BS. Or better yet, call them out on their bigotry and hate, because that's exactly what Rove is about. There will come a time, in the not too distant future, where American's are going to get tired of the divisiveness that is this administration. Mark my words.

Edited on Wed Feb-08-06 03:10 PM by Carni
I frankly could give a rat's ass what they think... the funeral was for the mourners and the family and friends of the Kings- it wasn't for Goober or Gomer Pyle down in the valley who "hate hearing them liberals" and it sure as hell wasn't for the bush family.

What you are suggesting?

That they should all have been good little girl's and boys and kept their mouths shut for votes because they might *offend* the bush voters?

THAT as far as I am concerned would be far more of a tasteless political manipulation than what these stupid repukes are accusing the speakers of doing.

They spoke their minds, they spoke their conscience...and it's about God damn time someone did that in this country--what possible objection would Mrs King herself have had to speaking THE TRUTH?

It's a good thing the King's didn't just get along like what you are suggesting Democrat's should do.

21. Yes and Fox News just presents only "pre-screened" RW audiences ...
FOX Cable news just paraded out Juan Williams claiming that Carter's remarks were NOT ok, while Lowery's were acceptable - why? On the basis that Lowery worked exclusively in the Civil Rights Venue. :wtf:

African American Journalists like Juan Williams are as dangerous to the Civil Rights Movement as are the DLCer's are to the "for the people first" moderate and liberal Democrats. It was astounding when they panned the "sea of white" Caucasoid clones all spewing hatred for Jimmy Carter. Knowing how devoutly religious Carter is, how dare anyone say that he doesn't have a right to speak about the racial prejudices of this Country's recent past, i.e., not to mention the STRONG under the surface messages conveyed by FAUX news with Juan Williams dutifully playing the role of "Uncle Tom."

We must flush out those who enable Rove & Co. to divide and concur the rights of both people of color AND the working poor.

I call this highly orchestrated obfuscation of important issues "The Tweety Strategy." No one can utterly confuse the facts as good as Herr Chris Mathews. If we are to successfully counter the Corporate media, we must continually purge-out of our ranks the *enablers* and call-out these mealy mouth bastards on their LIES and unadulterated bull shit spin.

It doesn't take much talent to just be able to pick up a phone and say "cover for us" now does it?

I don't think that anyone who saw it or who sees it buys this crap anyway. 56% or there abouts see the war a BS now and that is in the face of many people thinking you can't support the troops and oppose the war (again just a phone call away). I read a great article last week about how the media is so out of touch with the mainstream and not in a liberal way-they are in the WH's back pocket so bad that they have no idea what is going on outside their little bubble.

Rove isn't a genius he just doesn't have the civility or cooth to know that you can't masterbate in public. He is a lower lifeform and he takes advantage of normal expectations to cheat his way into WINS...short lived drastically disasterous "wins".

31. RIGHT ...
He isn't a "genius" ... He just is such a lowlife that he has NO problem playing outside the boundaries ... He is like the 22 year old who goes after vulnerable 15 year old girls ... It is easy fishing, but no one does it because there are clear social boundaries about it ... That doesn't make the 22 year old a "player" ... It means he is puke ...

Same thing with Rove ... He takes advantage of the rules of "fair play" that exist in an open political system ... Yeah, people have gotten dirty for a LONG time ... BUT, he just goes where even the most ruthless of political operatives would not have allowed themselves to go ...

Immoral ... THAT is what this puke is ...

on the Authorization to Use Military Force. Same MO as they used on the Iraq War vote (not that that gets anyone off the hook for voting on it) and on UN Resolution 1441 ("No automaticity" was they explanation for an extrememly vague piece of literature).

As soon as they got it passed (by lying) they ran out, declared VICTORY, and then told everyone what THEY thought it meant. Anyone who dared raise their voice (none did around 9/11) hated America (including UN members which makes no sense but that never stopped them).

I realize your intentions, but Rove, Bush, et al can no more steal an inspirational funeral service from me than they can steal Martin Luther and Coretta Scott King from me. Let them spin... let them flip... let them eat cake... Frankly, I don't give a damn what they do because those who took the time to actually tune in saw the very same service I did.

The only people who bring disgrace to Coretta Scott King are the ones who overlook the fact that her own video message was more anti-Bush administration policies than anything else stated at the funeral.

Because the quote from one news article says it all:

"She extended Martin's message against poverty, racism and war. She deplored the terror inflicted by our smart bombs on missions way afar. We know now that there were no weapons of mass destruction over there," Lowery said.

The mostly black crowd applauded, then rose to its feet and cheered in a two-minute-long standing ovation.

The only people that are in an uproar over this are the same bigoted group that chastised what King stoof for in the first place. They arn't fooling anyone other than themselves.

We've had the evidence since Watergate and the spying on John Lennon, MLK and others. We saw the "dirty tricks" in every presidential campaign and every important congressional race. Both Edmund Muskie and Ross Perot were victims, and Perot wasn't even a Democrat. Democrats will never regain power until they grasp the real nature of the GOP. That means the assembly of a media machine that can match the propaganda output of Carl Rove with his Fox News and MSNBC media outlets.

It was like chum to sharks for the African Americans. If there was 2% of Blacks that still supported him, it's zero now.

And a Nobel peace prize winner is not relegated to media spin to most Americans, no matter how they would like to make it appear. Carter just converted some more votes for November. Bush wanted to crawl inside Pickle's dress.

32. Clinton wasn't made untouchable with his speech...
Limbaugh has been going off on his speech this morning:

http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_020706/content/coretta_scott_king_funeral_3.guest.html

<SNIP> Limbaugh: I'm looking at something I haven't seen in I don't know how long. Bill and Hillary are at the pulpit side by side, and she is looking so lovingly and respectfully at him that I don't believe it. The last time I saw them side by side was in that picture when they were on the beach dancing to no music two weeks before the Monica Lewinsky story broke ... Let's bring up the president -- I'm going to regret this; I know I'm going to regret this -- the first black president at the Coretta Scott King funeral.

Clinton: President Bush 41 complained that he was at a disadvantage because he was an Episcopalian. Then he came up here and zings old Laura like he did. I thought, "That ain't bad for one of the 'frozen chosen.'"

Limbaugh: Frozen chosen?

Clinton: We --

Limbaugh: Maybe it's a sperm bank. That's a sperm bank term!

Clinton: -- doing good together and --

Limbaugh: Frozen chosen?

Clinton: Let me say --

Limbaugh: Clinton used to be a greeter in a sperm bank, I know that.

Clinton: -- I don't want us to forget that there's a woman in there, not a symbol. Not a symbol, a real woman who lived and breathed and got angry and got hurt, and had dreams and disappointments --

Limbaugh: I hate to say this, folks, but that's what he said about the mummy.

Clinton: -- and I don't want us to forget that. You know what?

Limbaugh: He said that about the mummy!

There's more... if you want to read it. But once again, Limbaugh proves what a classless bastard he is...
