6. They Have No Idea What Happened Yet. I Would Think That Is Really
jumping to conclusions at this point, and I see no relevance in it being Union or not at this point. Right now the only relevance is on the miners, their survival and well being.

The last thing I would think someone would care about at this point is whether or not the mine was unionized or not.

7. And, knowing the MSM, I doubt that the real cause will come to light
You ought to listen to Bob and the Miner's wives and friends calling in to the show. They have some truth to tell about the companies running the mines.

8. Relevance is that this mine had 140 safety violations in past year!
Approximately 70 of which were serious, according to an NPR interview in West Virginia of a local college vice-president who used to be head of federal mine safety. Also had about 20 accidents there in the past year alone. Unions do not put up with that much shit! Where do you get off criticizing anyone for pointing out that the mine was non-union, as if this means they do not care about the workers? Obviously, you don't have any miners in your family. My grandfather's family were coal miners from Kentucky. Ever heard of Bloody Harlan? Didn't think so. My dad, with a degree in electrical engineering from Notre Dame, Class of '33, couldn't find an engineering job in the height of the depression, so went to work as a miner in the coal mine his Dad worked at. He learned first hand what it was like to have to risk your life every day to support a family. Decades later, when he managed a large manufacturing facility, he told the union shop steward that whenever a machine on the shop floor was not working properly, it was to be immediately shut down and repaired. When it was fixed, my Dad was the first one to operate it, to make sure it was safe. The union bargaining committee told my Mom and me this story at my Dad's funeral, and said that this was the reason that plant never had a strike while my Dad ran it. After his death, new management came in and the strikes got very bad and the plant was sold. I know unions can be corrupted by greed, like any organization, but on the whole, the unions are responsible for the creation of the middle class in this country, and for the fact that we have any work/safety rules, as much as Bush waters them down with budget cuts.

14. That Was Very Informative.
Thanks for providing me with the background info, and I appreciate the position.

The reason for my original reply was seeing the "it's a non union mine" all in caps like that was the most important issue right now. I regarded that as a bit insensitive to the situation since the last thing that would be on my mind right now is the finger pointing at why this tragedy occurred, when the lifesaving efforts are still ongoing. Reading about whether it being Unionized or not had anything to do with the events would've hit me better if it were tomorrow, or after the rescue efforts were finalized.

Now granted, to each their own and you may feel differently. But since I also have the right to feel as I do I then have the right to express that.

12. my uncle is a retired union miner and he would tell you that unions
look out for the safety of the workers among the many issues they fight for...a fair wage, fair hours and a safe job (as safe as it can be in mining)...
