"Scourge of Scholars, Despoiler of Textbooks"

Terri Leo is from Spring, Texas (okay, you can pronounce it "Sprang" if you are from around here).

Terri is a former Spring schoolteacher and a member of the Republican Party in Texas. She wants to edit our public school textbooks to add her own little Taliban-esque agenda. We've been fighting this, ah, woman for years.

Once again, in the last couple of weeks, Terri Leo asked Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott to strike down a 1996 legal opinion upholding legislative limits on the board’s authority over textbook approval. Republican and Democratic legislators voted to curb the SBOE’s authority in 1995. Lawmakers acted because SBOE members were demanding that publishers make sometimes hundreds of changes to textbooks submitted for state approval each year.

Some of her previous suggested revisions included the following:

"Opinions vary on why homosexuals, lesbians and bisexuals as a group are more prone to self-destructive behaviors like depression, illegal drug use, and suicide."

Must not say "married partners" (oh, the homophobic reaction!!)

It's a shame that we've already been through this type of crap, but the old addage, "If you don't know your history, you are bound to repeat it" seems to be appropriate here.
