It's all about the mid-term elections.
They're beginning to realize that their constituents actually do care about being spied on (the most conservative ones, to be sure, the Libertarians, and much of the crowd that crossed over in the 2000/2004 elections: Can you say swing voters?). Those constituents that have drunk (drank?) the kool-aide and gone over to the Dark Side (FEAR) don't care. But that portion of the populace is getting smaller each day (thank whatever god out there watches over us). They're *actually* starting to wise up!
On the other hand (I'm putting my tin-foil hat on right now), this may be another Rove play. Do not underestimate the man! He's quite astute, and he's duped the best of us (Dan Rather, anyone?).
