DeLay To Oversee Justice Dept., the U.S. is 100% CORRUPT
--- WASHINGTON - Indicted Rep. Tom DeLay, forced to step down as the No. 2 Republican in the House, scored a soft landing Wednesday as GOP leaders rewarded him with a coveted seat on the Appropriations Committee.

DeLay, R-Texas, also claimed a seat on the subcommittee overseeing the Justice Department, which is currently investigating an influence-peddling scandal involving disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff and his dealings with lawmakers. The subcommittee also has responsibility over
NASA — a top priority for DeLay, since the Johnson Space Center is located in his Houston-area district. ---

I mean seriously, is there any doubt left in anyone's minds?

like the Attorney General's snap response to Arlen Specter, Bush trying to put the brakes
on investigating Abramoff twice (the prior was the Guam investigation), now we
have the Justice Department under the Hammer. If Bush has nothing to hide as many
Goopers claim, why all this trouble?

abuse of power in my lifetime. Have the likes of such overt & shameless corruption ever been seen in US history? This was usually the stuff of smoke-filled backrooms, with at least a façade of probity being maintained in public. Tricky Dick & Co. did it behind closed doors. SG

That will be the real wake up for a lot of non-neocon pugs. I see an homage to Ernst Rhom in their future.

This is "typical". Standard fare, SOP. The rule of scofflaw. Anyone who has followed mob histories can see what it is like only this time the mob IS the law and is even more full of themselves than ever for believing the contradiction.

The henhouse is nervous. Blood and feathers and missing chickens. The new farmer will protect us. Enter the new farmer, a fox dressed in hat and blue jeans. What's a chicken going to do now?

He's one of 8 repubs and 5 Democrats "overseeing" the money appropriated to the Department of Justice (among other departments) and the various programs run through those departments.

Its tasteless, but pretty meaningless actually.

33. Its kinda tasteless, but his power is quite limited
Delay is one of 8 repubs on the State-commerce-Justice Appropriations subcommittee (there are 5 Democrats); he's also on the Homeland Security subcommittee (one of 10 repubs, 17 members overall). On the full committee, there are 36 other repubs and 29 Democrats. He's not chairman of either subcommittee. And while the approps subcommittees are important in terms of the "pursestrings" (and earmarks) they are not primary committees with substantive oversight over the various departments. For example, Sensenbrenner's Judiciary Committee has oversight with respect to DOJ and he's not about to give up any power to an approps subcommittee.

Finally, after the Democrats reclaim control of the House, Delay will just be a jerk with his dick in his hand.

Here's the complete list of agencies over which the State-Commerce-Justice approps subcommittee has pursestring jurisdiction:

Department of Commerce; Department of Justice; Department of State (Except International Narcotics Control, International Organizations and Programs (voluntary contributions), Migration and Refugee Assistance, Nonproliferation, Anti-terrorism, Demining and Related Programs, Peacekeeping Operations (voluntary contributions), U.S. Emergency Refugee and Migration Assistance Fund, Economic Support Fund); National Aeronautics and Space Administration; National Science Foundation; Related Agencies: Antitrust Modernization Commission, Broadcasting Board of Governors, Commission for the Preservation of America's Heritage Abroad, Commission on Civil Rights, Commission on International Religious Freedom, Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, Congressional-Executive Commission on the People's Republic of China, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Federal Communications Commission, Federal Trade Commission, HELP Commission, International Trade Commission, Legal Services Corporation, Marine Mammal Commission, National Intellectual Property Law Enforcement Coordination Council, National Veterans Business Development Corporation, Office of Science and Technology Policy, Office of the United States Trade Representative, Securities and Exchange Commission, Small Business Administration, State Justice Institute, United States-China Economic and Security Review Commission, United States Institute of Peace

On NPR this afternoon I heard some GOP guy saying that really, the House GOP leadership couldn't "turn their back" on DeLay, since he had "gotten into trouble" getting them so much money. And he was serious. He went on to note that DeLay's own seat needs to be made more secure, and that now he'll be in position to "bring home the bacon" since NASA is in his home district and he's gotten the Appropriations committe slot. Sorry - I didn't find a link for this at the NPR web site.

NPR explained it thus: that DeLay's a money maker. They need him to keep hobnobbing with lobbyists (a big function of Appropriations Cmte chair) to keep the big bucks rolling in for the GOP. They presented it much more articulately, however.
