Family, divorce, and evangelicals.
Hypocrisy is best when savored with a fine wine. Scroll down the site linked below and use these when the subject of marriage and family values comes up:

"It is a surprise to many that divorce rates are highest in the "Bible Belt", and among conservative Christians and Jews. They are lowest in the Northeast, and among mainline/liberal Christians, Atheists and Agnostics:...."

Interesting reading.

2. People marry younger in the south and the Bible Belt.
And I do believe there is just plain fewer marriages in the area and groups you mention. The birth rate is much lower in those areas as well, so I would assume that is the reason why.

It was interesting reading.

3. My friend and I were talking about this today at lunch. Here we
are, living in Arkansas (considered by some to be the buckle of the Bible belt) with a divorce rate that is among the highest in the nation. How do you explain that?

4. If "Christians" were sincere about maintaining the sanctity of Marriage
they would work to amend the constitution to BAN DIVORCE instead of keeping people who love each other from getting married. However, that action would affect their constitutional liberties and we sure as hell can't have that. Has anyone heard a "christian" put divorce in their "definition" of marriage? Incredible hypocrisy. I urge all gays in this country to throw the tea into harbors from coast to coast.

6. One of the few institutions that Christ laid out a directive on
"What God hath joined together, let no man put asunder".
This is the basis for the catholics' anti divorce stance. Want to have some fun with a fundie? When they launch into the anti gay crap, drop this bon mot on them, and ask them why their divorce rate is at 50%? And why jesus says not a word about gays, out side of "judge not--". And sit back

5. That's old, old news
But it's still one of the best-kept secrets in America.

The Bible Belt has higher rates of divorce, abuse, adultery, assault, incest, pedophilia, rape, statutory rape, battery, petty theft, fraud, breaking and entering, public drunkenness, DUI, harassment, and just about any other small-time loser crime you can think of.

Massachussetts is the state with the lowest divorce rates, hands-down.

Even within specific areas, both secular conservatism and conservative religionizing are associated with moral misbehavior.

The only caveat I have is that we shouldn't gloat too much. Poverty is probably just as powerful a cause as religion, and may generate a lot of the religion itself. Opiate of the masses and all that.
