WASHINGTON
Reid's staff met with Abramoff team, helped clients
Feb 9, 2006, 01:05 PM

The Associated Press has learned that Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid wrote at least four letters helpful to Indian tribes represented by disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

The Nevada senator's staff also had regular contact with Abramoff's team about legislation affecting other clients.

The activities are detailed in billing records and correspondence obtained by The AP that are far more extensive than previously disclosed. They occurred over three years as Reid collected nearly 68-thousand dollars in donations from Abramoff's firm, lobbying partners and clients........

10. Amen.
Especially when the same piece is pure propaganda and actually says nothing incriminating.

7. Maybe we could try to stop reposting this piece of Republican
propaganda.

Or at least read it critically to notice that it actually says nothing.

It's carefully written, but there's nothing of substance in it.

16. I half agree
Part 2 of your post, with you all the way -- read and analyze first, then post if you must.

As for Part 1, I think we gain in the long run by posting even the supposedly bad stuff, so it can be discussed, debated, debunked. That's what separates us from the Freepers, where anything remotely off-message goes down the memory hole.

My two cents.

19. By re-posting, I meant that this article, in its entirety,
has already been posted on DU this afternoon at least once.

But even the first time, the post led with "Oh, NO!!! We've got to throw Reid under the bus!" or words to that effect.

Why fall hook, line and sinker for something and then post it?

Better to be more critical.

12. Ohhhhh...
Right, I had heard that he got money from the tribes (who would've donated to him anyway). Old news. Right. Got it. <puts foot in mouth>

14. The 2 most important paragraphs of the article. Reid did NOTHING wrong.
Reid's office acknowledges having "routine contacts" with Abramoff's lobbying partners and intervening on some government matters -- such as blocking some tribal casinos -- in ways Abramoff's clients might have deemed helpful. But it says none of his actions were affected by donations or done for Abramoff.

Spokesman Jim Manley says Reid's actions were consistent with his long-held beliefs, such as not letting tribal casinos expand beyond reservations, and were taken to defend the interests of Nevada constituents.

17. quid pro quo
Did Harry's position on tribal gaming or tribal aid CHANGE because of this money, that's the question. I would guess Harry Reid wouldn't be an advocate of tribal gaming because that would hurt gaming in Nevada, and at the same time I would bet he advocated for various tribal aid because that's a traditional constituency for western Democrats. This looks like the continued attempt to drag Democrats into the Abramoff scandal and nothing more.

18. Before Abramoff, Indian tribes usually gave more money to Dems.
The ones who began working with Abramoff began giving more money to Republicans. Indian money isn't the problem, Abramoff is the problem.

20. Here's a much better, longer, in-depth article. But this one's pretty
long. How many people are going to read past the headline and the first 3 or 4 paragraphs?
