Poll question: Has GD gotten weirder in the last couple of months? |
|
I've been a DUer since May of 2001, and have probably spent 80% of my DU time in this specific forum. I have been feeling in recent weeks that this forum has just gotten...I dunno...weirder than usual.
I'm not going to cite any specific threads because that would be tantamount to calling people out. Besides, it's just a vibe.
Am I alone in this feeling? Please take a sec to explain your opinion.

I feel sorry for any DUer who has a heart-felt beef with anything Cindy does. The hired and/or volunteer goons posting here ruin their chances of getting a fair hearing.

It's that there are many differences of opinions about hot subjects. For too many people a troll means "someone who doesn't agree with me". All these various opinions are still within the big tent that is the Democratic Party. If I could wave a magic wand, I'd like to see people spend a little more time thinking before they post, go over the detailed rules of DU, and try to realize that there are many different points of view and that a difference of opinion doesn't necessarily make someone a troll.

But the thing I notice most is that there are tons of threads that should really be posts on other similar threads.
I've had lots of problems with the Search function over the past 2 months, which I suspect has lots to do with these problems.
There is a general sense of disorganization I feel now when I use the forums. Before, everything felt organized and manageable. Not anymore.

Just three months ago anyone predicting the invasion of Iran was considered, by many, a kook. Now it seems like a foregone conclusion.
We have seen so many positive starts followed by failure. So much bad news. So little relief from our own party.
Also, I have never seen so many posters swallow the bush propaganda. On a variety of subjects people simply will not be corrected and will not check the facts. Some are trolls but most I believe are not.

It's not campaign season, so people aren't so tightly focused. You could be seeing the division of thought on various issues in the general public, leading you to conclude GD has gotten weirder. Or, it could be increased anxiety because we still can't get a focused strategy on anything and another election is coming up. Or, it could be infiltrators. Or alot of newbies who really aren't aware of all that's gone on the last 5 years. Or, it could be a combination of all of it. Some days it seems weirder and weirder, others it seems as normal as it ever was, hehe, normal, riiiight.

I think that a number of factors have resulted in DU:GD being peculiar in the past couple months. They include, but are not limited to, the following: {a} some of the more gifted "old timers" seem to have drifted away, or at least participate less often in discussions of substance; {b} a number of people are expressing more hostility to one another, often from discussions that appear to me to be related to DLC versus progressive viewpoints; {c} a few people exhib the classic symptoms that make personality disorders a drag; and {d} there are a few people who disrupt in an organized and purposeful manner.

way back when I started there were more substantive discussions in the lounge, only without the flaming. Maybe that was during the "okay, the fun is over" period. Now, it is less like GD lite. GD seems to me alot like an LBN. It goes through "story of the day" phases. It was all Cindy, all Guckert, all Schiavo, all SOTU, etc. Maybe more general discussions just fall off the first page.

I just ask that you separate the two because,...they are different. I dunno, but it seems like people are very prone to jumping on your back if you disagree (even mildly) with the established viewpoint...
It's mostly cool though.

64. Yuse got your dumb trolls and yuse got your smart trolls. |
|
The dumb ones (Freepus Idiotus) have a short posting life; they can't express their thoughts very well, but make no attempt to hide who they are. The smart RNC variants (Paidforpostus Bushbotus) are far more subtle and difficult to exterminate. They communicate quite effectively in a relatively non-hostile manner while hiding their true nature. Exposing them requires a careful monitoring of their comments on a wide variety of subjects over a long period of time. Once exposed, the only known remedy is to ignore their comments.

it was when there were fewer members. I think I joined when there were only 10,000 members and I lurked for many months before posting. Back then when someone posted you knew them a little better because of their posts. I find now that there are so many strange names in a day and even if they have over 1,000 posts, sometimes it's the first one I have read from that particular DU'er.
I also, think all the extra forums have siphoned off many subjects that once were posted on GD. Just, MHO.

76. Post-Katrina Cognitive Dissonance |
|
We've always known about the total incompetence, cronyism, and sheer evil of the Bush-Cheney regime. But in the past six months, since Katrina, everyone knows it, even those who pretend otherwise. Not even an idiot can be in doubt about the fundamental nature of this regime. But the MSM *can't* come right out and say this, for obvious reasons. The result--a classic case of cognitive dissonance. We are in a very similar situation that the Soviet people were in in the Breshnev era. Everything they read in the papers or saw on TV was a lie, and everyone knew it--but it couldn't be said outright. This was the real reason the USSR fell--nobody believed the lies anymore... We here at DU *know* all this, and see the lies pile up every day, see the insanely dangerous chasm ahead that the psychopaths in power have created for us and see ourselves heading towards it, with apparently no way of avoiding toppling over into chaos...and we know that everyone in the world knows we're right, and that no one seems able to stop it...well, naturally we're a bit on edge these days...

78. I think so. I've been lurking since November 2004. The most glaring |
|
differences off the top of my head would be the quality of the posts. I used to see far more threads kicked that contained value, insight, important strategy and motivational wisdom. They got a lot of attention and deservedly so. There were always fluff threads or quick emotional opinionated threads but they were mixed along well with the high quality ones. Now, it seems that there are far more off the cuff impulse threads with not much to offer other than quick opinion that many times doesn't even have a 'stop to really think' notion about it. In the past those types of threads, especially the ones that were far-fetched or unsubstantiated, would either be called out quickly and then drop or would be avoided altogether. Nowadays they get far more front page time then they deserve and are kicked exponentially more than many threads that actually have something strategical to say. The dupes or twists of the same point threads also seem far more out of hand.
Those are the things off the top of my head that I've noticed but even in spite of it DU is still the most addictive damn place I've ever been to.

Surely you forget the great Nader Wars. Or the "I know Paul Wellstone was delibratly killed" flame fest. Or the "My God we've won!....Ooops, we lost" in Nov. 2004.
Weirdness is the norm for GD. Just takes different forms at different periods.
But this is a weird time in general. I think we've all got the "Early Mid-Term of Bush Second Term Blues."

Edited on Thu Feb-09-06 10:21 PM by kohodog
There is so much going down and so many lies being promulgated by these guys that I'm having trouble focusing on the "most" important issues . I am spending more time on new art projects as I feel that for me at least I need to be productive on a personal level and do it in a way that is meaningful to me(and hopefully others) . Sometimes the art community is far ahead of the rest, and I do not claim to be in that category, but I see many bumps in the road ahead.
Also, the threads are moving much more quickly, and the influx of new members has brought more diversity of opinion, including the subtle and overt disruptor's.
It also seems like we are approaching a tipping point with the Regressive Agenda being promoted by today's conservative fascists. Perhaps more importantly, there may be some like myself who feel like lightning rods with great sensitivity to the destruction to the environment, human rights, civil rights and economy who are tweaking out a bit. I have slowed down my intake of distressing information for survival and to try to make a positive contribution to the situation. Steeping myself in depressing, nonproductive talk sometimes inhibitis my ability to act for change.
That doesn't mean that I don't find DU a great place and I still check in almost every day, but I'm not able to keep up with everything going on here as much as I'd like. So many threads to sort through now to get to hard info.
Peace

93. Psychologically we are at a strange place |
|
The 2005 "off year" or local elections went well for the dems, and 2006 looks like it SHOULD continue this trend. In some (red) areas of the country, nothing at all has changed. DU'ers from these areas may be very frustrated. They want some action! They have nothing to lose. In some areas change is happening. DU'ers from these areas may want to 'stay the course'.
Here at DU, the 2003 primary coalitions are crumbling, and 2008 coalitions are starting to take shape. 2006 has high stakes battles that might chip away at GOP control, and some chances for progressive to take some stands.
This positive election news, juxtaposed with the declaration of martial law only forty minutes away at any given time, makes GD what it is today.

99. You are right. We have lost a lot of people who used to |
|
contribute and do more research. I won't name names, but I miss many of them.
GD seems a lot slower, too. I am constantly on DU/GD night and day. GD Posts used to move all night and all day. If I saw a post at work, when I got home, it was gone. Now, I can leave work and find the same posts on the first page when I get home--or within a few pages. Funny that with thousands of more "people" the forum would slow down. Very weird.
I have my theories about this--the primary one being disruptors. There are at times annoying and inane posts that remain on page one for days even, while the real issues sink to the bottom. I don't think we necessarily have as many people as we have multiple registrants who talk to themselves. :silly:
Perhaps the combination of fewer substantive posts coupled with trolls and disruptors has taken a toll.

I don't post much but have read DU for quite some time now. It seems that some posters are more hostile and are waiting for the opportunity to pounce on anyone who does not agree with them. Some of these arguments are over basically trivial things. That's what discourages me from posting, hence, my low post count.
Maybe we are just worn out. By that, I mean over the past year, even longer than that, there have been so many things that have come to light that we were so sure would expose this administration for what they are, and we were hopeful. But since none of this was covered by the corporate media or spun by them to actually make the admin look good, that we've had one disappointment after another. Maybe we are just so discouraged, disillusioned and angry on how this country could go this bad this fast. And angry people tend to lash out. That's just my opinion.
