Bizarro World - Peggy Noonan calls CSK funeral "Wonderful"
Wow, I think I woke up in the Bizarro World.

In an op-ed piece in today’s Wall Street Journal, Peggy Noonan (yes, that Peggy Noonan) thought the Coretta Scott King funeral was great – Her opening line: “Listen, I watched the funeral of Coretta Scott King for six hours, from the pre-service ceremony to the very last speech, and it was wonderful – spirited and moving, rousing and respectful, pugnacious and loving.” (sorry, no link, as the WSJ is pay to view – I get the hard copy at work.)

Further on: “… a rhyming preacher, one of the old lions, a man of warmth and stature, freely used the occasion to verbally bop the sitting president on the head. So what? This was the authentic sound of a vibrant democracy doing its thing.“

More: “It was gracious, full of applause and cheers and amens. It was loving even when it was political. It had spirit, not rage. That’s part of why it was beautiful.”

So, to all the RW blowhards out there worked up into a mock lather of outrage over Jimmy Carter or Rev. Lowery, I say that if a partisan hack like Noonan thinks it was wonderful, you are really in the lunatic fringe of a very small minority to be offended.

Believe it or not, she also had strong praise for Bill Clinton, calling him a master.

Granted, she still gets in her partisan cheap shots (saying how it was not like that partisan Wellstone memorial, or something like that) and also calling Hillary’s speech practice for her campaign in 2008. However, she did praise both Clintons strongly and with admiration.

Maybe Noonan, and some others on the right, have realized that a bunch of white people knocking the King funeral is backfiring?

1. Let me be cynical
Listening at first amazed to a CNN blurb that quoted Clinton not Bush, one of the dignified ways out for RW talking points was to gloss over the event as per Noonan's misty eyed diversion from controversy. The rabid, when available, ALWAYS wins out though. Not surprised at all to see someone picking up the soft version. maybe she was going off on vacation and Katie was assigned to be the GOP point female this time around.

You would think the "charm" tack would have been the preferred GOP method, but that is just sanity speaking. It's nice to know at least that the RW still has something to hate and fear so much that they cannot ever rest easy in their crimes. If Noonan's style here was ALWAYS the way they reported protests they would not only feel unassailable(hence their tactics) but probably have to be in fact unassailable.

17. I'm no Peggy Noonan fan, but that's unfair, I think,
and unnecessary.

I think it's true enough for a lot of people on the right, or more probably many people on the right don't care one way or another. But there was nothing in Noonan's piece that I saw that indicated insincerity in her praise for the event. FWIW, I saw it too and think she characterized it pretty accurately.

I am glad she was moved by it.

4. Anyone who actually WATCHED the damn funeral knows it was
great and nothing wrong whatsoever happened there. The assholes rely on the fact that most people didn't watch it so they can trot out soundbites out of context to whip people up.

I for one am pissed that the right wing "politicized" and dessicrated her funeral by resorting to cheap bullshit.

9. WHAT!?!?!
This is bizarre indeed!

Maybe something really is up because that bag of wind George Will has also been disparaging his Chimperor lately...

13. Will has been doing it on & off for a while
Back when Dean's anti-war message had made him the big front-runner before the primaries started, Will basically said it would take the wind out of the anti-war movement if Bush actually went out & said that they were wrong and apologized to the world. Of course, it's been over 2 years now since that time (hard to believe...)

14. Maybe it isn't so strange...
She's nutty to be sure, but I always felt that her conservativism was more a bizarre attraction to Reagan than a real ideological drive.

I'm guessing she's hoping to write for Hillary, even if it's hidden away on the side - she's been out of the game for a while, and perhaps thinks she can get back in with her.

16. I really do believe she has an alcohol problem
and I don't think she cares that much for Hillary. She needs to face up to her problem, go to AA or whatever, and get help.

18. Lest you all forget. Noonan trashed Wellstone's memorial and
actually wrote a column where she pretended to BE Paul Wellstone chastizing mourners. It was a totally fucked up column and I hope she paid dearly for it. But just maybe she learned her lesson or maybe she is one of the rats jumping ship. I still consider her a RW media whore, living off and perpetuating the Reagan myth.

PEGGY NOONAN
'No Class'
What Paul Wellstone might have thought of the memorial rally.

My friends, I miss you and send you love.

That memorial rally was . . . something. I watched it from where I am, in the place beyond. It's wonderful here. You'll be amazed at what I think is one of the best parts. Two words: No politics. I love it. Who knew?

But we have to talk. I know what you were trying to do the other night, or what you sort of meant to do. But it was bad.

I know why you did it, or what was immediately behind it. Politics is a hard business. The U.S. Senate is up for grabs in a time of war. You wanted to get out the vote, rev up the troops. And of course you want to keep the Senate, of course you want to hold on to my seat, of course you want to win. I loved winning.

19. no, she hasn't learned her lesson
If you saw the whole article, she basically said that the CSK funeral was nothing like the Wellstone memorial, meaning that CSK's was better and the Wellstone one was bad.
