The Nation: Burt Bacharach: Hero of Our Times

The Nation -- The only real reason I like to watch awards shows is for the faint possibility of hearing a big star saying something political that will piss a lot of people off.

Last night-- amidst the standard fare of
Grammys banalities ("I'd like to thank the Lord for this honor," "Isn't Mariah's dress so hot? Let's hear it!," etc)-- one man took a valiant stand for justice. It wasn't Bono. Nope. It wasn't even Kanye West.

The man of the hour was Burt Bacharach-- known to my little brother's generation as "that singing dude in the Austin Powers movies." Bacharach, who won for his Dr. Dre-produced album "In Our Time" declared: "I never like to be lied to by a girlfriend or agent, and certainly not the president of the United States."

Sadly, Bacharach's comments came during the non-televised portion of the show, so it's not likely that they'll have a global reach. But with the
Oscars approaching, hopefully someone will follow Burt's act on stage and let Bush have it. Come on stars, no one cares about your publicists, your managers, or your 37 personal assistants... Use the platform!
