I live in the United States of Ironica. |
|
Edited on Fri Feb-10-06 12:26 PM by KyuzoGator
● The president, who comes from an oil family, is a former oil executive, whose vice president was the CEO of an oil extraction services company...tells us we have an "oil addiction." ● The president, whose party and pundits argue vehemently against the well-accepted theories of natural selection, evolution and global warming...tells us we need more science teachers. ● The president slashes taxes on the rich, which in turn creates a massive deficit...then tells us about how important deficit reduction is. ● Conservative pundits who constantly lecture us on morality are gambling addicts, drug addicts and sexually harrass their employees. ● Fox News similarly pretends to be a beacon of virtue...while their sister network brings us "Married With Children," "Temptation Island," and "Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire?" ● Bill Clinton was impeached for lying about a blowjob. George W. Bush has violated the Fourth Amendment and lied us into a war and impeachment is laughed at as if it is a ridiculous concept. ● Jesus himself told us to worship in private, that deeds were more valuable than words, and that love and understanding should be the way of the world. Pat Robertson is a "Christian" leader who calls for the assassination of those who disagree with him. ● George W. Bush opposes Affirmative Action, but sees no problem with Ivy League schools accepting C-average legacy students. ● 9/11 is the reason we are at war, yet we have taken no action against the country whose citizens comprised 15 of the 19 hijackers. ● Closed-source voting machines are being manufactured by companies with clear political motives. ● Wal-Mart is an "All-American" company that destroys small family-owned American businesses with cheap merchandise manufactured in Communist China.
Welcome to the United States of Ironica.

Well before Fox News.
All else is pretty in sync with my sentiments.
I believe it is called "Hypocrisy Democracy"

5. I actually liked MWC a lot. |
|
But no network with shows like that should ever dictate what morality should be.

8. Rupert Murdoch is a businessman...and FOX is just his brand |
|
Edited on Fri Feb-10-06 12:45 PM by YOY
Associating FOX with FOX News as an extension seems to be forgetting what this really is: a business based on entertainment. Although FOX Network tends to goose step a bit more these days, so has most of American entertainment.
The TV News industry serves a much broader base than any newspaper ever has. It provides the simpletons of this world an alternative to actually physically reading anything of use. Murdoch saw the need for some fresh entertainment (an alternative channel) in the US in the late 80s. He saw a market for a Right Wing news channel in 1996 and used it. It's a shame that it's irresponsible journalism and its initial appeal was to people who thought that the Media was "too liberal" (the same people who think couldn't tell their asses from a hole in the ground unless Rush Limbaugh informed them.) Note that the FX network created by Murdoch in 1994 actually plays some materials such as Morgan Spurloch's "30 Days" and a few other shows that could actually be seen as countering FOX New's agenda. It is just business.
FOX News isn't an extension of the FOX network. It just shares the same owner and brand. In marketing terms I think the whole association between the two is a perfect example of highly 'Branding' gone wrong...fortunatly the general public hasn't caught on to that yet.

9. I agree 100%...FNC is entertainment, not journalism. |
|
It should be packaged as such. I actually wouldn't have much of a problem with it if they were just honest about what they were.

25. Murdoch's personal politics are extremely right-wing. |
|
Although, that may be because he is a businessman... and a rich man... and a powerful man...

31. And Trump is left wing as is Martha Steward, Richard Branson, and Ted |
|
Turner. As an MBA I would like to point out that not everyone in business has the "greed is good" mentality. One can be a rich powerful man/woman without being a RW douchebag and the ability to cut a deal can be done without cutting forests.

27. Yes, that a thread that strives to highlight irony.... |
|
... and yet misses the irony inherent in MWC is, ironically, ironic. Either that, or I was reading too much into MWC. Or someone else didn't. I dunno*.
I'm not trying to crap on this thread: the premise is spot-on. I just think that MWC was a poor example to use. I think that the double-speak that spews from this misadministraion (e.g., to name but a few: the "Clean Air Act" and the "P.A.T.R.I.O.T. Act") are better examples.
*Then again, I seem to get more out of the movie "Starship Troopers" than a lot of people do.

So substitute any of the other garbage Fox has broadcast over the last 10 years besides MWC.
My point was that a network that shows MWC has no right to tell us what is moral. It was not meant as a knock on MWC.

14. k&r- Kerry had it right that their violations are blatant and no one cares |
|
Its so friggin' obvious, but there is a large chunk of people in the United States that are so mind numbingly aloof and ignorantly single minded that the administration can do whatever they want just as long as the prevent the Iraqi terrorist (formerly known as the Iraqi civilians) from jumping on their hidden home made missiles and riding them across the ocean targeted directly at only the cute blond girls under 12 years of age.
Criminals, everyone in the Administration, straight criminals.

Ironic or plastica the temped label maker goes, Until the earth is covered in perpetual plastic useless crap, No questions for presidential ironica bozo He gets a free ride until we round up all these hacks. Cheney's flaccid heart runs on underclass crow, its no suprise when we get in war due the antics of this clown, Halliburton Ironic's wanting desire for the oil, broken plastic in republic's imperial crown; meting justice overblown.
We then convert the spirit to plastic for our toil, Empire's eroded hearts who've forgotten world of human spirit and life as king, pants that stretch when the fat fries drink comes home to spoil, the only thing you ever cared for, that eroded last so long gone final thing. Are we living in times of ironic or plastic, filling our bags with recycled elastic.
