"Ivanov Says Russia Against Confrontation With Iran" - scary
This is quite frightening because the article says>>>

<snip>

"We will never allow for a confrontation which which could lead to conflict," Ivanov said in the interview with Italy's La Stampa newspaper, ahead of talks between Russia and Iran in Moscow next week over the controversial programme.

"Any attempt to push Iran to a show of force could have irreversible consequences," he said.

"I have hopes for the talks between Russia and Iran planned for mid-February with probable participation by the Chinese"

</snip>

Which is almost certainly diplomatic speak for "If the US attacks Iran, Russia and China ain't gonna be happy". Oh boy.

3. But did they do anything when we invaded Iraq?
The idiot-in-chief expects they will do nothing this time too.

4. This was...
...quite predictable. The Russians and Chinese are protecting their own interests, as they should. The Chinese especially need Iranian energy.

5. which is why I said "scary"
damned right the Chinese want that oil real bad or else their economy ain't gonna keep burgeoning in the way it has of late. And the Russians have an interest in preventing the US placing a choke hold on the ME.

This is not good news.

9. I think it is probably good.
If Iran is really after nuclear weapons, they will most likely eventually acquire them. The big question then is will they be rational. The US and the Soviet Union had a confrontation for half a decade ,but never had nuclear confrontation because both sides were rational enough to know they didn't want a nuclear war. If Iran turns out to be a rational nuclear power, then the only big loser will be Israel. I think there will be dramatic changes between the Israelis and the Palestinians.

12. Actually, this is a good thing
Having another nuclear power (albeit a weaker Russia not the former USSR) to counter US runamockiness is vital to restore stability to this world. The Bush administration has shown that it cannot be trusted with power. The sooner they are out the safer we'll be.

15. Just politics as usual.
On another Web site where I got into a fight with a Iranian about this issue i said the following about the world reactions- America and Isreal will be the ones to attack. America may or may not get directly involved but will allow overflight in Iraq and logistical support. ALL of europe will be behind us politically but will not help materially in any way. Russia will be totally two faced about this situation. They have no real dog in this fight. They dont need Iranian oil and an oil crisis only allows them to make more money with their own oil. But they DONT want Iran to be against them any time in the future. So the Russians will "tisk tisk" the west and if anything happens they will say "oh you poor Iran you poor, poor Iran, Picked on by the big old bad Americans. Lemme kiss your boo-boo make it better." But for the most part Russia will not do anything to help Iran. They have their own problems with Islamic insurgency. They really can't afford to have a terrorist sponser with a nuclear weapon on thier doorstep.
