Cheney Says NSA Spying Should Be an Election Issue

By Jim VandeHei
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, February 10, 2006; Page A07

Vice President Cheney suggested last night that the debate over spying on overseas communications to or from terrorism suspects should be a political issue in this year's congressional elections.

Speaking to Republicans gathered for the annual CPAC convention, Cheney said the debate over the National Security Agency surveillance program "has clarified where all stand" on an issue that has drawn criticism from congressional Democrats and some Republicans.

"And with an important election coming up, people need to know just how we view the most critical questions of national security, and how we propose to defend the nation that all of us, Republicans and Democrats, love and are privileged to serve," Cheney said.

His comments reflected the emerging GOP plan to make national security and terrorism the centerpiece of House and Senate elections. White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove telegraphed the strategy last month when he told a Republican audience that "we are dealing with two parties that have fundamentally different views on national security."<snip>

3. Right. So let's undo it. Maybe get congress to insist that if this is
to go to referendum that it _has_ to be on paper.

5. No, other way around. He needs the rigged election system to confirm
his right to spy.

8. Well.... Sure, the repuke evoting machines are part of the problem
However, there is a reason BushCo has not been forthcoming and transparent with their NSA spying program, especially when it would be very easy for them to screw with the election process using the NSA. After all, could they have coordinated everything involving the evoting in 2004 so far without a leak by using the NSA (sworn to secrecy)? Would the NSA have access to the White House, without questions during a time of war, to set up a computer bank for Karl to electioneer precincts where help was needed and to tap into a computerized election process?

7. Just more blustering BS as scripted by Karl Rove -
All he is saying is that they will use FEAR of Terrorism as a political issue in 2006. Repugs will claim that Dems are against spying on Terrorists. And dems will say -- Get a warrant and knock yourself out.

We already knew this.

groups that support the Bushbots understand what this really means they will revolt. Just look at the Gratzky gambling wire taps. You know damn well, red America is not going to like the Feds spying on their heros and sheros. Of course we know these wire taps are different, but the ditto heads are unthinking and can easily be manipulated into thinking that "wire taps" mean all wire taps. It the manipulation by association technique that the Rovian successfully used concerning Iraq and 9/11. Just mentioning them in the same sentence or paragraph has millions thinking and believing that Saddam was behind 9/11. I think the Dems should make the pitch a couple of times by alluding to wire taps in the same sentence as Gratzky (sp).

You know damn well that the Bush supporters in those red states don't the Fed wire tapping their meth and gambling deals.
