DU Folding@Home Team - Thread #2
Edited on Tue Jan-03-06 08:51 AM by mcscajun
I'm reposting ny_liberal's original plea here, with appropriate links.

ny_liberal: "Back in 1998, I was introduced to the SETI project through some obscure website I was visiting, so I decided to try it out. It worked pretty well, but eventually I became dissatisfied with the research and results. Without getting into a discussion of the possibilities of extra terrestrial life here, I decided donating my computer time to that sort of project was a waste of time (other than proving the capability of distributed computing projects), and eventually stopped for several years. Then in the middle of 2003, I saw a reference to the Stanford project (Folding@Home) and decided it was a worthwhile project to donate computer resources to.

Today I noticed that Kos members set up a Folding@Home team
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/12/22/13216/695

I created a team for DU (Team number 48157)and would be willing to change teams if more people are interested in joining this group

DU Team stats: http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teamp...

The long term possibilities - even medium term possibilities - are tremendously exciting. Every day's folding helps to build the knowledge that will someday produce cures."

So, if you are interested, Download the software and sign up on the Folding@Home website: http://folding.stanford.edu
DU's team number is 48157

The Freepers have a team, and they're way ahead of us. We need a couple of hundred DUers to get on board with all the CPUs they can muster. Please, if you can, set the FAH applet to launch on startup.

This morning's Stats on the DU Folding@Home Team: 57 CPUs in use, our Team Ranking stands at 5,284 of 42,001. We've been moving up fast, and I think we'll continue to do so; this is about cures, about possibilities, about the future. All of these are things progressives understand and support. Kicking Freeper Butt is just a interesting Fringe Benefit. Their current team ranking stands at 805 of 42001; they've got 311 CPUs running on their team.

More CPUs!!! C'mon, DUers!!!

As I said, ny_liberal started the Original Thread
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=364&topic_id=753&mesg_id=753

alfredo quite rightly pointed out that it was getting a 'bit long in the tooth' and tough to load at reply #242

5. Question! I got screen saver for Mac and I don't know how to:
1. Confirm that I properly registered for DU team.

2. Check out statistics to see what we've accomplished.

You see, when I'm on SS, I move the mouse and it dissappears. So how do I get the info?

Thanks, in advance.

6. Some information
Go to http://folding.stanford.edu/stats.html and click on "Donator statistics". When the screen comes up type in the name you registered with in the appropriate box. Once your donor name comes up click on it and you'll get your stat information.

If you have just joined and haven't completed any units yet you'll get a screen like the one found here http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=userpage&username=anonymous

After you complete a unit you'll get a screen more like the one found here http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=userpage&username=Christian%5FBargmann which lists information like the donor name, their team, score, etc.

Also, you can check their FAQs at http://folding.stanford.edu/faq.html

Hope this helps and welcome aboard. :hi:

14. I am over half way done with this WU. This old beast takes forever.
This year I will buy one of the new Intel Macs and should have a bit more number crunching ability.

Don't forget to set your client to launch when you login (at boot) That way you won't forget to turn it on.

On the Mac go to System Preferences, Accounts, Login Items then add you Folding@Home client there.

25. I aint surprised
Jim Rob apparently doesn't trust this whole technomological stuff. He says "I don't open my CPU to Stanford mad scientists. Just a flaw in my character I guess."

His fear of and inability to understand modern computing definately helps to explain the Paleolithic look of his forums. How on earth did this clown find his way onto the internet anyway?

And if anyone actually believed that he would lend his assistance or endorsement to a project that helps further modern medicine, well that's just crazy talk. This whole "let's all pitch in and do something for the good of all humanity" is just not something a guy like him believes in. Ole Jim Rob does nothing that doesn't show a profit.

You visiting Freeper types might want to remember that next time he holds a donation drive.

I started folding what must be a protein on illegal steroids way back on December 26th and I am just at 99.25% and should be on the board with a big number for the team soon. Like I said before, we will be in the top 500 within a month! My iBook 1.33 GHz has taken well over a hundred hours fondling, carressing and tweaking this monster.

27. Trouble sending in finished work units
Just a heads up to all DU folders. Apparently some of the Stanford servers are having some difficulties right now as can be seen on this page:
http://vspx27.stanford.edu/serverstat.html
Note that some have a status of REJECT, FAIL or DOWN.... Also, at the time this post was made Wed morning, there were several of thier servers with very few new work units to send out.
You may not be able to send a finished work unit in or get a new unit til they iron out thier issues. No worries, the F@H client will keep the finished work units in a queue locally on your hard drive and try to resend automagically every 4-6 hours. If unable to get a new work unit, again, leave the client on, it will attempt to grab one on a sliding time scale til it does get one.
Such is life, always waiting for this or that, nothing unusual..........

28. Thanks for the info! That shoujld head off some questions before they
get asked. :)

I've found that the F@H client doesn't like to be watched during a send. Shy, I guess. The two times I had the client displaying to me during a send it crashed out. So, I only check in from time to time now, and when it gets close, I leave it alone, minimized, in the system tray, where it likes to be. :)

And anyway, ranking is just a number...and beating the Freepers just an interesting fringe benefit. It's really about the Work Units and supporting medical research...not scores.

37. Recruiting...
Teams can not be combined. The points stay with the team, no matter who leaves, joins etc... I have crunched F@H for other forums in the past and those points have to stay with that team which is as it should be from my point of view.
Recruiting is always encouraged (such as this thread), but dont go to other teams forums to do it! Thats tacky and frowned upon by the F@H community at large.

This is one of the bigger quandries concerning any distributed computing (DC) project. We have all these money-saving, low power options on our computers. But they can interfere with these projects. It is easy enough to turn `off` these power saving features, but, that WILL increase your power comsumption, which in turn increases your cost. If you have 1 maybe 2 computers, thats maybe not too big a deal, but if you are running many machines, it can add up. In my particular case, there can be up to 6 machines involved with F@H, which can add ~ $7 to $9 a month to my electric bill. Not to mention the increased cooling bill in summertime. Imagine what a company with multiples of machines has to spend.... So BE CERTAIN if you are using a company machine, that you have PERMISSION IN WRITING BEFORE starting any DC project!! There have been instances where criminal charges have been filed against people for `illegal` use of company property! DC projects are wonderful, but it aint worth possibly losing a job, or that blissful relation with your significant other over money concerns.
Then we have the wear & tear, and life span issues if always left on debate. Dont wanna go there, it has been debated to death in other places... Anyhoo, enough rambling.
To disable sleep mode in Windows XP: go into Display Properties, Screensaver tab, choose (None) as the Screen saver, then click the Power... button which brings up the Power Options Properties window. Choose the Always On Power Scheme then make sure Never is chosen for Turn off hard disks and System Standby, and set Turn off monitor to your desired amount. Continue with the Hibernate tab and uncheck (clear) Enable hibernation. Click OK, then click OK in the Display Properties window. As for BIOS power saving settings (used more on notebooks), that has too many variables to get into, but since WinXP is so good at it, the vast majority of times, these power settings can be handled with it.

No clue how a Mac handles these functions, maybe someone with that experience can chime in.

edit: If you have the F@H project installed in screen saver mode, then obviously do not set the choice of screensaver to (None). Make sure the other power features are disabled instead....

52. Yes, VERY good point. Get Permission if it's a work PC
We don't need anymore victims of abusive/ignorant egos in the government or corporate America firing people and/or taking them to court

Google for Dave McOwen to learn of the most egregious case that ever occurred to someone running a DC project on work equipment (and, having met Dave, I can say he got the bum end of the stick in that case)

56. thank you!
Its the home computer not one at work. Four of use use it so we tend to just keep it on all day.
I will have the children do it for me when they get home.
I like the computer but have no real understanding about how it works. When I need something done I just yell HELP! and a child will roll their eyes at me and do what ever needs doing.
Thanks again.

61. I tried my text client again, and it returned an error.
the WU didn't work. I noticed too that it want's to work on the same protein as the other client. When I launch the text client, the other client resets to zero.

What I don't know is if they are sharing the work, or are the duplicating the work.

63. Yes. It's a dual processor machine, and I have the clients in different
directories like they say to do.

I'm thinking I might have this confused with another client I was running a few years ago. That was the Distributed Folding project. It ran its course. Maybe you can't run more than one on a machine like you could with Distributed Folding.

66. A bit of both, I'd think...only one way to find out...
Ask. :)

Meanwhile, there is this from the FAQ:

Does Folding@home run on dual processor machines? Yes, you can. Additional processors must run the console version (with the "-local" command-line argument if run on Windows). First, make additional directories for each processor and copy the FAH Console executable file into each. Then configure them with the -config switch, filling in settings for each. It is very important to make sure that under the "Advanced Settings" option each copy is given a unique machine ID (from 1 to 8). The first copy will default to a machine ID of 1, so additional copies should be given IDs of 2, 3, 4, etc. Each may then be run out of their installed directory, using the -local switch on windows.

67. Dual processor support
Sounds like mscajun nailed it. We need to give the text client a unique ID. Start the text client with the -configonly flag; e.g. FAH502Cxx.exe -configonly Leave your user name and team ID the same etc.., when asked to change Advanced Settings, say yes and when prompted for a uinique ID choose 2 (or 3, or 5, as long as it is different from the other instance of the F@H client). The client will close when you are finished, then start er up again and all should be swell! That should do it. :)

90. It is working like a charm. Now I want the text client to launch at
login like the GUI version.

Can I do it with a bash script? What about Applescript?

It will have to launch the terminal.app, then launch FAH5.

139. can't you just (automatically) launch terminal at system startup/login?

See, from within terminal you can set terminal to run FAH5 when it (terminal.app) launches.

Take a look. When you do a "save as" the dialog box will give you the option to launch
the .term file when it starts.

All I know is that all I do is launch terminal.app and I'm off and crunching (@400 Mhz sadly.)

Our DU team has now passed the 4000 mark and is rapidly approaching 3000... Then 2000... Then?
We need some evangalizing to grow more productive and continue to rise in the rankings faster and further.
Some of us are crunching huge work units, a few are earning over 240 points with our first WU. I was wondering how long it was going to take to finish it and get some points posted on the board for the team. 6 days!

Not bad. We just have to keep crunching numbers and adding new members, we'll make it near the top soon. It will be slower going as time goes on, but the real mission is to help researchers. Never lose site of that. If you are not happy that we are not progressing up the list fast enough, don't worry about that. Keep running your client because it is the right thing to do.

Thank everyone of you for giving a bit of your processor power.

And be sure to set it to launch automatically when you turn your computer on.

It's nice to see the two clients playing nice on my machine. It might take a week before I see anymore WU's posted.

I need to write a script to get the CLI client to launch automatically. I guess I should hit the books this weekend.

...More CPUs!!!

We need a few hundred DUers on board this project.

We've got 59 DUers Visible on the stat page, with no doubt some additional ones who'll show up once their first WU is complete. A total of 81 DU CPUs are currently cranking...

More CPUs!!!

Each one, spread the word to those who haven't seen this thread. If everyone just recruits One Person, we can double this team in no time!

Go, Team DU!

104. From the Folding@Home FAQ
Edited on Sun Jan-08-06 07:23 AM by mcscajun
Who "owns" the results? What will happen to them? Unlike other distributed computing projects, Folding@home is run by an academic institution (specifically the Pande Group, at Stanford University's Chemistry Department), which is a nonprofit institution dedicated to science research and education. We will not sell the data or make any money off of it.

Moreover, we will make the data available for others to use. In particular, the results from Folding@home will be made available on several levels. Most importantly, analysis of the simulations will be submitted to scientific journals for publication, and these journal articles will be posted on the web page after publication. Next, after publication of these scientific articles which analyze the data, the raw data of the folding runs will be available for everyone, including other researchers, here on this web site.

This information is not going to be sold, traded, or held as proprietary; it's going to be disseminated widely and in a scientifically sound fashion. I think that's about as good a guarantee as you can ask.

102. Anyone know how the processor count is decided?
I'm running the F@H client on 4 computers, but it only shows 2 CPU's active in the last seven days. (BTW, my F@H username is IdahoDemJoe). I'm looking at 3 of the machines right now as I type this. One is 210/1000, the second is 135/250, and the third is 977/1000. So I know that I have more than 2 CPU's at work.

I hope to have as many as 10-15 computers running the client soon, but I'm wondering if it's calculating all my WU's correctly. I know that the work being done is for a good cause, but I have this selfish urge to beat the idiots over at FR, and I want my WU's to be credited correctly to the DU team.

from the FAH pages: Active CPUS have returned WUs within 50 days.

So, if you still have CPUs that haven't completed a WU, they're not in the count yet.

As mcscajun suggests, its possible that some of your clients may not have finished thier first work unit (wu) yet. They cant be counted til they do.
Without trying to sound condescending, please verify that you have the same user name and team number correctly typed in on all the clients. ;)
I have mistyped it in the past and crunched for a week or so for the wrong team!!
10-15 procs coming on-line soon, eh?!? :9 mmmmm more wu's!!

111. same wu
It is very common for F@H clients to be crunching the `same` work units. The Stanford group needs to verify again and again that the simulation is acceptable. The science behind it is way over my head, but there are myriads of variables that even the `same` work units can and do apparently give varying results. They take our aggregate results and meld them into something coherent (to them anyway...) :)

108. They've all finished at least one WU
The count now shows 3 CPU's for me, but only 2 active in the last seven days. I've checked the username and team number, and they all are the same. The good news is that the WU count appears to be correct. One of the PC's finished it's third WU last night, so that may have upped the processor count.

I do some consulting for a company that has about 40 PC's, with several of them idle for long periods of time. The owner and I are good friends (he's a fellow liberal in a VERY red state), and he's very enthusiastic about the Folding@Home project. He wants me to install the F@H client on all his workstations, but I'll probably only use the mostly idle PC's.

Others may have ideas... :)

As to the estimate, it changes up or down based on how fast things are moving on your particular CPU, but it's generally accurate.

There's a fine line between recruiting and being obnoxious. :)

I'm trying not to cross it.

156. If I have two diff computers going
does that count as two computers? When I fired up my laptop, I installed the FAH software then when I started, I just used the same username and of course the DU team number. Should I have used a different name for a different computer? I'm still new to this concept.

Personally recruit one DUer...get them to do likewise.

175. I am tryin. I just don't know how to explain this
It is rather complicated at first. I am usually in a political chat room and those I've tried turning on to this all say their computers are too slow :)

But I will keep looking for recruits. I just don't know anyone with a bank of servers ready to start grinding for a good cause. The only one I know is my brother and he's a Farker, not a Duer. He's not quite a Freeper but he's insidious with me when it comes to agreeing on politics. He's more of a sociolibertariapitalist. hehe new word

Is the graphic you get when you see the folding going on.. represent anything really? I mean.. is it really supposed to represent what you are working on? I looked at the gallery of proteins and they were all pretty unique... does my glob turn into something unique at the end or does it take hundreds of thousands of us to feed the machine that compiles those pretty ribbons?

176. The graphic is a simulation of the protein folding your PC is
working one, yes.

Your PC is working on only the tiniest part of the puzzle; it gets put together with all the other WUs completed by other PCs to get the Unique protein result at the end. :)

When I came home my laptop was locked up. I rebooted and now when I try to start FAH it says it is already running. However, I don't get the icon in my system tray and have no way of looking at it working, and the progress of my WU. :(

If it's not, then instead of rebooting, power off and power back on.

173. I ended up having to uninstall the FAH program
I scoured a bunch of forums at their website and couldn't get a good answer. I could not get any sortof window or icon to come up to pause or stop, but to no avail. I tried shutting down the processes in task manager but apparently that didn't work as it kept saying I already had a copy running. Finally I just uninstalled and reinstalled it. Working beautifully now, but when I connected, it retrieved and started folding a new WU. Oh well. I thought I would install it on my desktop at home but tonight I quickly realized why I don't every use that computer any more. It's on it's last legs.

I hope I don't lose any more work. Do you use the screen saver mode?

and then. I don't peek at it when it's in the process of sending results and picking up a new WU. I've found it might crash at those points if the graphic is up. Don't know if that's a constant across PCs, or just something my setup experiences. YMMV.

Thanks for your persistence. :)

Weird, I think I found a new obsession.. I just can't leave it alone. And I thought about what I said earlier about the freepers being mean. This style of competition is the best kind. It doesn't benefit any of us specifically, but all of us collectively, the more we compete. I don't mind being called names by freeps if it's for a good cause. That said... SCREW THE FREEPERS! 178. You Got It! That's the right attitude!
The cheerleading and the "obsession with the numbers" is all well and good...but that's just about getting more folks involved. The Results Are What Truly Matters...more proteins folded across the board...on every side of the political spectrum.

And if the Freepers want to be mean-spirited about it, well, there's nothing we can do about it...'cept ignore them and keep on keepin' on. :)

Almost all the rankings posted are drawn from here ("site 1"):
DU Folding@Home Team Members which includes both a ranking as well as data on # of "Active CPUs within 50 days"

However, the "2,599" posted above was drawn from the "other ranking website" ("site 2") -- F@H Stats - Team Radar Screen -- which at any one time presents a more current ranking (but does not include data on # CPUs while providing data on other teams' rankings relative to DU).

For example, at this very moment, site 1 shows "2,519" and site 2 shows "2,504"...and site 2 will be updating in a half hour and the difference between the two sites will expand.

Compare the times and rankings in posts #203 and #204, the first from site 1 and latter from site 2...but at approximately the same time (PST):

Post #203 from site 1, Jan-11-06 5:29PM: #2,615 ( 96 CPUs )
Post #204 from site 2, Jan-11-06 5:34PM: #2,599
