Yet ANOTHER flip-flop from the GOP!
http://www.sptimes.com/2006/02/12/Tampabay/Senator_changes_mind_.shtml
<snip>
Sen. Mel Martinez, nearly a year after leading the charge for federal intervention in the Terri Schiavo case, now says he may have been off-base.

"Perhaps this was not in the realm of federal concern. It may have been better left to state courts to deal with it," Martinez said in a taped interview for Political Connections that airs today on Bay News 9.

...imagine that! and now he's stumpting for Harris, too.

1. You mean Frank Luntz led focus groups have finally determined this is not
a winning issue for the republiCONs? That was a right smartly executed about face there Mel, as an old military guy, I appreciate a nicely performed maneuver like that.

4. That's why it's important that Dem candidates...
not let people forget how Repugs interrupted vacations and made diagnoses from the Senate floor in an effort to intervene in the Schiavo family's affairs.

3. the Martinez Memo
http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/Schiavo/story?id=600937&page=2

<snip>

This is an important moral issue and the pro-life base will be excited that the Senate is debating this important issue.

This is a great political issue, because Senator Nelson of Florida has already refused to become a cosponsor and this is a tough issue for Democrats.

<snip>

This legislation ensures that individuals like Terri Schiavo are guaranteed the same legal protections as convicted murderers like Ted Bundy.

7. Keep politics out of medical decisions ... that is the core issue.
It is not just Schivo, it is abortion too, and right to die with dignity and the right to have necessary palliative treatments. I'll bet that Martinez still advocates govt intervention in those medical areas. We on the left need to re-frame the argument to oppose all ideologically based medical interventions. Our offense should be the cry: "Keep your nose out of my business!". That could also include spying, taping and snooping. If "They hate us for our freedoms" don't give those freedoms away!

10. and it all falls under PRIVACY - including your phone calls
emails, and internet searches.

Conservatives HATE government intrusion - so this can be made into a HUGE wedge issue. Keep the traditional GOP voters disgusted with their party - keep them HOME on election day.

13. You got it. But "privacy" is not a word that is loaded enough. We need
words like:

SNOOPING

GOVERNMENT INTERFERENCE

MEDDLING

PRYING

BUREAUCRATS TELLING YOUR DOCTOR WHAT TO DO

We need words that have a deep emotional load.

Words that enrage!
