Are you buying this?
Are we sure the guy was shot with buckshot? Are we sure he's alright and doing well? Are we sure of the surrounding circumstances..sure of anything about this report? I had to step back for a moment and get back to the state of reality. We can't be sure of anything!!! Who knows who was shot, how they were shot..if this person is fine, what the heck is really going on.

A sad state of affairs when it's hard to believe anything coming from 'that' direction, these days!

6. I've been pelted with #4 steel shot...
from across a duck pond. Didn't hurt, just pissed me the hell off.

#7 or #8 lead, unless at very close range, isn't going to do much life-threatening damage. It might put an eye out, tho.

30. Buckshot, Birdshot, Ratshot...
I recall Clifford Baxter, the ex-Enron exec who was about to testify, was "suicided" with ratshot (case signed and sealed by John Cornyn, whose star suddenly rose). :tinfoilhat:

So what's "ratshot?" How are all these pellets different? :dunce:

26. Yep. You have to get really close because, depending on the size
of the buckshot, there are only two or four pieces of lead per cartridge. Bird shot scatters because it's light, and there are many pieces of shot so it hits a larger area (size of choke).

5. Just the fact that they took a day to get any word out makes it highly
suspicious. Like they were either trying to figure out if they could keep it quiet completely, or trying to get their story straight.

While I wouldn't necessarily discount the official version, there's a lot of other versions I'd believe if evidence came out to prove them true.

8. I think the story of the person who was shot is true.
Remember, this happened yesterday and is only being reported today! I suspect it was discovered by some reporter who constantly reviews hospital admissions and saw "gun shot wounds" and followed up on it.

As to how badly the guy is hurt. Probably not very badly. You use very small shot to hunt quail. Anything bigger would totally destroy the bird. Now Cheney might not care about that, but most quail hunters want to save the meat and cook it for dinner. Those small pellets wouldn't do much harm unless the victim was shot at very close range.

20. Yeah, it does.
Quail are very small and fast birds. A covey (flock) will flush in front of a party of hunters, each one taking aim and swinging a shotgun barrel. I can see how a novice hunter could lose situational awareness of other hunters, swing the bead on them, and pull the trigger.

#6 shot is small ... I just opened a shell and looked.

But as a very occasional hunter what really bothers me was this a canned
hunt? Those are just sick. Raise birds in pens and let them go so people can
kill 'em.

these are not "canned hunts" per se. I hunt at a preserve in NC where they raise game birds and release them for hunters. Keeps me sharp for the fall seasons.

29. not really a pen raised quail is far differnet then a wild bird
the odds that they will live to reproduce and become part of the wild
population are very small ..... true hunters support conservation
management practices that allow for sustainable wild populations
of native animals.

and release them for you to hunt. Like I said, it keeps me sharp during the off season.

Additionally, I am and have been a member of DU (the 'original' DU) and Pheasants Forever for over 10 years.

<snip>
One of the pieces of legislation I worked on when I was in Congress was the Wilderness Act. Probably one of the most important pieces of legislation I passed when I was in the House. Al (Simpson) handled it over on the Senate side. We set aside almost a million acres additionally of public lands in Wyoming...back in 1984.

Obviously, you have to focus on that (the environment). From a standpoint of fishing, clearly, the quality of habitat, water becomes very important. Water is an important issue all over the West....Increasingly under pressure because of the demands of a growing population. It's a tough issue to referee and resolve but it's very, very important that we not do anything that would destroy great fishing. I'm an avid flyfisherman, as an advocate of catch and release...I much prefer to catch wild fish or chase wild quail in South Texas...and perfectly happy to adjust as required.

And I also care a lot about gun laws. I worry sometimes that there is a growing antihunting sentiment that I run into with people...people who have no idea what it's all about...have never done it and don't like the idea of somebody else doing it.

I'm a very strong advocate of the Second Amendment and that's an important part of protecting and preserving our heritage. (Q. I'm assuming you're speaking for the the other half of the ticket, ie, President Bush?)I'm speaking for myself but I'd be happy to speak on behalf of the president if you want me to. He and I are usually very close on this ...(keep in mind) he and I fish in his bass lake in Texas....

<snip>

Pay close attention to the mention of the legislation for land purchase, since they are now talking about selling OFF federal land. Wonder if there is any connection to this land and the sale plans?

38. Was Cheney given a blood-alcohol test?
and was the shooting immediately reported to the County Sheriff?

My cousin accidentally shot himself with one of the handguns from his collection this summer, when his wife accidentally bumped into him. His wife called 911 and the first people to arrive were the police, not the ambulance. The police asked dozens and dozens of questions of both my cousin and his wife and they confiscated his handgun and the bullet. It took the police about two weeks to close the case and rule the shooting accidental.

My question is whether the county sheriff was immediately notified and whether alcohol consumption was ruled out. Hasn't Cheney had two or three DUIs? And unlike Bush, I don't think he's ever claimed to have sworn off alcohol.
