8. I read the entire document.
Had to stop periodically as I burst out laughing. I cannot believe what Abramoff brazenly did. I was not aware of the tax evasion. Lots of verbiage about kickbacks. Basically, he promised to lobby on behalf of the tribes. In at least one instance I remember, he took their money and then lobbied against them. That particular tribe was trying to reopen a casino. Abramoff is a real bastard.

See my post above for the best part. I'm quite positive it refers to DeLay.

A very well-written document, not a lot of legal jargon in it.

Wouldn't it be dandy if Ney tried to save his a** by spilling the beans on election tampering?

Questions on Three Trips

The 1997 Moscow trip is the third foreign trip by DeLay to be scrutinized in recent weeks because of new statements by those involved that his travel was directly or indirectly financed by registered lobbyists or a foreign agent.

Media attention focused on DeLay's travel last month afterThe Washington Post reported on DeLay's participation in a $70,000 expense-paid trip to London and Scotland in 2000 that sources said was indirectly financed in part by an Indian tribe and a gambling services company. A few days earlier, media attention had focused on a $106,921 trip DeLay took to South Korea in 2001 that was financed by a tax-exempt group created by a lobbyist on behalf of a Korean businessman.

DeLay on March 18 portrayed criticism of his trips and close ties to lobbyists as the product of a conspiracy to "destroy the conservative movement" by attacking its leaders, such as himself. "This is a huge, nationwide, concerted effort to destroy everything we believe in," DeLay told supporters at the Family Research Council, a conservative Christian group.

The three foreign trips at issue share common elements. The sponsor of the Moscow trip, the Capitol Hill-based National Center for Public Policy Research, also sponsored the later London trip. The center is a conservative group that solicits corporate, foundation and individual donations. <snip>

is on Google.

http://www.beyonddelay.org/summaries/ney.php

In early June 2002, Rep. Ney asked Mr. Abramoff to arrange a golf trip for him and some of his staff. Mr. Abramoff complied, sending an e-mail to Mr. Schwartz explaining that Rep. Ney had asked the Tigua to help pay for a luxury golf trip to Scotland on a private plane to play at the legendary St. Andrews course. The e-mail states "our friend" "asked if we could help (as in cover) a Scotland golf trip for him and some staff . . . I anticipate that the total cost . . . to be around $100K or more."

22. INTERESTING. Page 11? says August, 2002 a $50,000 check
from a Texas Tribe payment made it's way to DC. Delay's trip was in 2000 and Ney's trip was June of 2002. It MUST be the Ney trip they are referring to. Man...I hope they get Delay in this too.

17. Isn't it Bob Ney of Ohio? I was disappointed to only see a Rep #1
I'm hoping there will be more than this plea because I didn't see any reference to Abramoffs working for the Russians or the Marianis Islands. Also the ties to lobbying for Israel mentioned in the plea.

I guess we need to wait for the Blogger lawyers to explain it all.

23. It looks like "Representative 1" is Ney
DeLay has taken three overseas trips with Abramoff since 1997 -- to the Mariana Islands, Moscow and the United Kingdom -- and received more than $70,000 from Abramoff, his associates and tribal clients for his campaign committees.

Investigating DeLay, who is facing separate campaign finance charges in Texas, could take up to a year and require the cooperation of other witnesses before issues surrounding the Texas Republican are resolved, according to people familiar with the case.

25. Melody? on the Al Franken show just said Rep #1 IS Ney and she also said
Tom Delay WILL BE GOING TO PRISON and his career is OVER. Scanlon has pleaded guilty, Abramoff has pleaded guilty and Delay's aide has pleaded guilty. Delay is FINISHED. I have NO CLUE who Melody is, but she's on Frankens show all the time. I just never catch who she is or what she does. She must cover Washington?

29. Texas DA Ronnie Earle is solidly validated...
This REALLY vindicates any claims of political motives attributed to Texas DA RONNIE EARLE !!
From the 9/29/05 Nation's David Corn,

"The weak-kneed House Ethics Committee last year issued two reports that showed that DeLay
had improperly pressured a fellow House Republican to vote for George W. Bush's Medicare
legislation (offering to endorse the member's son in a congressional primary if the member voted
the right way), had improperly (through his staff) asked the Federal Aviation Administration to
find a plane with Democratic Texas legislators who had left the state to thwart a DeLay
redistricting scheme, and had improperly held a golfing fundraiser with energy executives when
energy legislation was pending in Congress. For all this, DeLay received a few taps on the wrist.
The ethics committee noted that three fundraisers for a political action committee linked to DeLay
and eight corporate donors to this PAC had been indicted for allegedly funneling illegal
contributions to GOP state candidates. Now that DeLay has been indicted as well in this case, will
the ethics committee undefer action?

Besides all this, DeLay has been implicated in other rule-bending or -breaking episodes. In 1999,
the ethics committee privately chastised him for threatening an industry lobby group for daring to
hire a Democrat. The Washington Post once quoted an unnamed lobbyist who claimed DeLay
would not allow him to plead his client's case to the GOP leadership because he had not donated
to Republicans. (Can you say "extortion"?) And, more notably, DeLay has been drawn into the net
of the wide-ranging scandal involving Jack Abramoff, the indicted GOP lobbyist who allegedly
bilked Indian tribes, who allegedly commited wire fraud (in a Florida casino deal that ended up
with one of his minority partners being murdered allegedly by hit men), and who apparently
picked up the tab for overseas trips with DeLay.

The Texas indictment--in which DeLay and his associates are accused of illegally running
corporate contributions through the national Republican party in order to skirt the state ban on
corporate donations to local candidates--is but one questionable episode in DeLay's history. But it
is now the biggest and most direct threat to his future. Conviction could lead to a fine and
imprisonment--and removal from the House."
