Who hunts by car?
The Associated Press quoted Katharine Armstrong, one of the ranch
owners, saying she watched the shooting from her vantage in a nearby
car. She said that Whittington shot a quail and went to look for it
in the grass. Cheney then went to search for more quail.

(link: http://www.boston.com/news/nation/washington/articles/2006/02/13/cheney_accidentally_shoots_hunting_partner/?p1=MEWell_Pos4)

So I'm just wondering how often the daughter of the land owner tags along in a car when then menfolk go hunting. She then goes on to provide the 'eye witness' account that places all the blame on Whittington leaving the group and not saying anything, making it purely accidental on Cheney's part. Hmmm...

I wonder if there's any connection here between this and Cheney's recent weird behavior - the bad choice of dress at that Auschwitz memorial, for example. There's others in the DU archives. Could congestive heart failure be affecting his brain?

5. SOP for an executive with a potentially fatal condition.
His health is far worse than we really know. For that reason, the have a mobile unit available at all times. Heck, even the president has his own mash-styled unit in Air Force 1.

13. I can understand it for the prez
But if Cheney is that sick, why is he serving in office?

What other job could you continue to hold if you were so sick that you needed an ambulance to accompany you at all times?

Did Gore have his own personal ambulance?

What kind of "sportsman" sits in his car and shoots and kills other living things? What a monster this vile Dick is.

6. That's why this issue is "manna from heaven" and should be
Obsessed on. The moderate Republicans and conservative Democrats are mostly familiar with guns and hunting.

Cheney comes out smelling putrid and there are many unanswered questions that point to a clear cover up.

Plus, we need someone from the HONEST press to go to this Corpus Christi hospital and inquire about just how "Very Stable" (Double Plus Healthy) this Wittington in Intensive Care Unit is TODAY?

4. Actually her actions aren't all that suprising
After all, many women hunt and enjoy the outdoors. And given that a noted personality was on her family's property, is isn't at all suprising that she was along for the ride at least.

I don't see any great conspiracy in this one, excepting that perhaps Cheney had been drinking, perhaps a bit too much, and made a drunken mistrake that is being swept under the rug.

10. I do, I've gone hunting with my Father and cousins ... there's NO ROAD
if you are a TRUE game hunter. That is, you would NOT be able to follow the movements of the hunters from a paved road.

Armstrong's story stinks to high heaven. I still believe it was another member of the family that leaked this to the press. This Shrew Shill would not have "let on" that he is presently in the Intensive Care Unit.

Many unanswered questions! What is his condition NOW?

15. Well, first off, who says that Cheney is a "true hunter"?
His penchant for canned hunts is well known, and this might have been something similar. But even if it wasn't, South Texas is not, for the most part, terribly difficult terrain to transverse in a car. I've been blasing through that neck of woods, out in the middle of nowhere, in a big old '76 Buick, and about the only thing you have to watch out for are some large rocks and dried vegetation getting stuck up by your muffler and catching on fire.

Besides, if this was some grand conspiracy to kill this guy, why use such a small size of birdshot? Hell, Cheney could have used a twelve guage, shooting #4 buckshot, and it wouldn't have raised eyebrows even if he had killed the guy. Instead, you're trying to tell me that he's trying to kill this guy, using a gun and a load that is more suited for scaring vandalous teenagers rather than actually killing people. Give me a break:eyes:

No, I think that the greatest conspiracy here is that Cheney was probably three sheets to the wind, and didn't hear the guy call out before he turned and blasted him. Nothing else makes much sense.

11. Actually, they don't shoot from the car.
Edited on Mon Feb-13-06 09:47 AM by Zen Democrat
I've seen these outfits before down in South Texas. They are usually vehicles specially equipped for hunting on large areas of land. They are driven out to the hunting area, and if there isn't any game around, they drive to another spot, etc.

It's a rich man's hunt for certain. But, I don't think they shoot from the car. Of course, the rich and privileged hunter probably does whatever the hell he wants.

16. Poachers, city hunters, rich piggies
hunt from their cars.
Poachers because they want a quick kill and get away.
City hunters will drive into the country and hunt from their cars, I've seen this many times here especially during goose season.
Rich piggies who can't be bothered to walk their ass out to where the sacraficial game is staked out for them.

19. You people have never hunted birds
For one thing, you need a car or truck to get to the hunting locations - in this case, corn fields or other harvested areas where game birds congregate. My friends and I hunted pheasant in Connecticut from a pickup truck, drove the blacktops through farms and stopped at likely looking havested fields. We then leave the vehicle and leg it through the stump corn. One memorable time we saw two hunters returning from a jaunt into some stump corn, guns broke open and shouldered. We watched from the truck as they called out that there weren't any birds in the two fields. I sent my Wirehaird Pointing Griffon, Bouches, a prize-winning field trial competitor, down into the first field and with whistles, directed her to quarter the fields, right ot left and reverse. The two hunters told us we were wasting our time. In a matter of minutes, Bouches locked onto some "heat", holding rock-steady on point, her nose fixed a clump of stump corn no bigger than bowling ball. My hunting companions (I had stopped shooting by then and only worked the dog) followed the dog into the field as I tried to steady Bouches from the road, then, she bumped THREE pheasants, a male and two females that had been huddling in this tiny clump of stump corn. My hunting companion fired both barrels and shot one of the birds that Bouches immediately located and carried back to me - to the amazement of the two hunters who had sworn there were not birds out there. "Get a good dog," I told the hunters.

This is a little off the subject but I wonder why this "hunting party" didn't have a dog so the man wouldn't have to go out looking for the bird he shot. In most cases, without a dog, you can't find the dead bird, even if it is lying at your feet.

18. Here in Texas, on game ranches, they do.
Edited on Mon Feb-13-06 10:46 AM by sparosnare
Keep in mind, these birds are not out in the wild. They are raised on ranches, people buy a license to hunt on the ranch and they're guaranteed a kill (or kills). It's not like Cheney & Co. were out in the woods hunting.

They were driven to a prime spot and probably did very little walking. Coveys of quail were probably all over the place. Either dogs or men in trucks retrieve the birds shot. If I remember correctly, the report said Cheney bagged about 60 birds that day. That's a hell of a lot of birds.

This is NOT hunting. It's slaughter.
