Does Iraq remind you of a WW2's "A Bridge too Far?"

The movie portrays British general Montgomery's plan as a politically motivated mistake that wasted many lives and the Dutch countryside including some towns. Montgomery was competing against a superior, yet flawed American general, Patton. This might remind us of Bush versus Clinton, our modern-day Patton.

Worse, the mistake was compounded by incompetence, poor planning and tactical errors at other levels such as radios with limited range. This folly, named Marketgarden, has another thing in common with Bush's folly: Poland. Bush made the comment about not forgetting Poland's contribution to the Iraq invasion while Marketgarden ended up getting many of the brave Polish paratroopers killed as they jumped into a territory held by German troops in an effort to continue the Marketgarden strategy long after it had failed.

Meanwhile Patton was poised to finish the job with American courage and ingenuity. With Iraq, continuing the containment policy would have given America want it wanted and the costs in lives and in dollars would have been much much less.
