Poll question: Hunter's Safety course
Edited on Mon Feb-13-06 01:32 PM by tyedyeto
Should the course be mandatory and have to be renewed periodically?

On edit...I fixed the yes choices

1. Other: Mandatory, every year.
If you want the privilege, prove you can do it safely.

3. Mandatory refresher training every year
most hunters dont shoot every day, but only once a year or so when hunting season comes around. A refresher class is a great idea to remind them of the simple safety things they may have forgotten since last season - things like "dont take a shot unless you are absolutley certain no one is in your line of fire"

2. Smacks too much of "one idiot spoiling it for everyone"...
..."...and the government response? Hassle everybody."

The Cheney-esque idiots won't pay attention, and the real hunters will be annoyed at having to repeatedly prove they know how to tie their shoes.

Whatever you have in mind also sounds too much like "the stereotypical liberal response to everything: add a layer of bureaucracy". I think we'd like to AVOID appearances to that effect, unless it's really what's necessary (which doesn't seem to be the case here).

4. How often do you renew your driver's license?
I'm not saying every year, but these people have deadly weapons in their hands. Shouldn't they have to show they are educated in usage?

6. No, they shouldn't.
I took the mandatory safety course almost 30 years ago, I haven't hunted in years, have only fired a gun once or twice in the past two years and I haven't forgot one bit of firearm safety training. It's as second nature as tying my shoes; it's just as automatic. I've never had even so much as a close call, nor has anyone in my family.

Who do you suppose they should "show" something to?

Yet another useless bureaucracy created due to someone's irrational fear? :wtf:

5. Other. How about annual review for the first 3 years, to make sure
it takes, then every five years after. If performance on the review is under par, then the person must again review the subsequent year.

That would make sure the kids, who make most the mistakes, get it drilled in thoroughly, and will catch those who because of age or infirmity go hunting for birds but shoot lawyers instead.
