Whoah! Were they afraid Bush would leak it?

Man shot by Cheney recovering well

<snip>

The accident was not reported publicly by the vice president's office for nearly 24 hours, and then only after the Corpus Christi Caller-Times reported it Sunday. Cheney spokeswoman Lea Anne McBride said the vice president's office did not tell reporters about the accident Saturday because they were deferring to the ranch owner to announce what happened on her property.

Hunting parties are not required to report accidents, said state Parks and Wildlife spokesman Tom Harvey. The state penal code requires people to report fatalities, which would be investigated by law enforcement.

Presidential spokesman Scott McClellan said Monday that Bush and senior aides were told Saturday night by the staff of the White House Situation Room that somebody in the Cheney's hunting party was shot, but he said he was not told until Sunday morning that Cheney was the shooter. He said he contacted the vice president's office about making the information public.

The vice president visited Whittington and his wife before returning to Washington on Sunday. Cheney "was pleased to see that he's doing fine and in good spirits," said McBride said.

Whittington told a hospital official he would not comment.

Ranch owner Katharine Armstrong said each hunter was wearing a bright orange vest, and Parks and Wildlife Department spokesman Steve Lightfoot said Cheney had a valid hunting license obtained in November.

1. They don't tell George about airplanes in DC flight space either.
Remember when he kept bicyling oblivious to the airplane flying above DC?

5. They don't tell Junior much about anything.
Which is a great indicator of just how vital they believe his input would be - as in, not at all.

6. "Hunting parties are not required to report accidents, ..."
That's kind of frightening. Who's to say what is an accident, and what's not? I'm guessing we weren't supposed to hear about any of this, frankly.

7. That's crazy. You only need to report it if the person dies?
"I'm guessing we weren't supposed to hear about any of this, frankly"

12. Aren't hospital personnel required to report gunshot wounds?
Maybe I watch too many tv shows (or not enough) but aren't hospitals required to report any gunshot wounds to the police?
Maybe that is only for certain states?
Anyone know?

husband is a hunter so i was asking lots of questions. he says character of person important to him when going hunting. he stays far away from some. he is cautious and responsible. but some things he put out

his immediately comment was .... was cheney drinking. another big deal to him was if they were wearing orange. we figured they were in manly camaflouge and husband says too hard ot see in brush.... but if they were wearing orange, if this man was wearing orange... NO reason for shooting.

15. Update: Card told Bush Saturday night about Cheney's involvement

http://www.guardian.co.uk/worldlatest/story/0,,-5615683,00.html

<snip>

White House chief of staff Andy Card told Bush Saturday night about Cheney's involvement in the shotgun accident.

McClellan was informed Saturday night that someone in the Cheney hunting party was involved, but he didn't know that Cheney was the shooter until the next morning, the spokesman said.

McClellan said when he learned, around 6 a.m. Sunday, he urged the vice president's office to get the information out ``as quickly as possible.''
