"White House under fire over Cheney shooting
Bush knew, but it was owner of Texas ranch who went to the media
Updated: 2:07 p.m. ET Feb. 13, 2006
WASHINGTON - President Bush knew Saturday evening that Vice President Dick Cheney had accidentally shot a hunting companion, but the information wasn’t made public until the next day — by a private citizen — the White House acknowledged Monday.

In a contentious briefing on Monday, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said the vice president’s staff was focused on making sure that the shooting victim, Austin, Texas, attorney Harry Whittington, was receiving adequate medical care after the shooting on the private Armstrong Ranch in south Texas. Whittington and Cheney were hunting quail together. "

15. Techinical point, but if that were buckshot
instead of birdshot, this would be Chappaquiddick II: Electric Boogaloo.

I'm really starting to get the idea that this story is a smokescreen of some kind.

12. Eh?
Whittington allowed himself to be shot to cover up some other story?

That's a good one.

9. I, like others here, want to know if he had a hunting license.
Someone should email K.O. and get him on the license question.

The WH is probably going to say that when you are the V-P for Bush you can break the law, any law, you want to.

13. Do you need a hunting license for a "canned hunt?"
I'm not exactly sure of the hunting regs for each state and haven't ever been invited to a game farm to hunt - it's possible no license is needed for a hunt like this in TX.

18. In Texas, any time you pick up a gun to shoot an animal in any circumstanc
You HAVE TO HAVE A LICENSE. Yes, even in a "canned hunt."

Some saavy reporter should have already contacted Texas' Wildlife Department to ascertain whether or not Cheney broke the law by hunting without a license (which would result in forteiture of the vehicle they used to chase the quail, the guns, and also in huge fines).

21. So their excuse is that Cheney was soooo busy looking after
his friend, that no one else was able to brief the press? Do they have problems with walking and chewing gum at the same time? Maybe they need more staff or something.
