John Inman No Longer Free
p://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2005590603,00.html

Wikipedia:
John Inman (born 28 June 1935 in Blackpool, England) is a British actor. He achieved enormous celebrity in the 1970s as the camp Mr. Humphries in the British sitcom Are You Being Served? (1972-1985), with the catchphrase "I'm free!". Humphries was widely criticised as a homosexual parody; Inman and the show's creators point out that while the character had camp mannerisms, Humphries' sexual orientation was never explicitly stated.
.....

On 27 December 2005 Inman entered into a civil partnership with his partner of 33 years Ron Lynch in Westminster under a new British law giving official recognition to same sex relationships, which had come into effect the week before. <1>

5. And they're the one's the fundies claim are destroying the sanctity
of marraige? Maybe the wingnuts are fighting this so hard because they're afraid we'll show them up - like, well, like we are in Mass already.

Congrats to the newlyweds!

10. Sadly
Isn't Texas the number one state on divorce? Jesus never talked about gay people and neither should I. It's none of my business and my government shouldn't treat me any better than someone else where it concerns being equal in the eyes of the law which is what it's about.

8. Wow, the show ran THAT long?

Humphries was widely criticised as a homosexual parody...Humphries' sexual orientation was never explicitly stated.

That's ridiculous. I loved Mr. Humphries, he NEVER behaved negatively about his sexual orientation, and his so-called "discretion" about it is exactly what made his character so endearing! Anyway, congrats and thanks for the memories--now you really ARE free!

13. I think it was explicitly stated once
In the later years, the show moved out of the department store when the staff inherited a hotel. The caretaker's daughter, an innocent lass, tried to share Mr. Humphries's bed with him since there was nowhere else to sleep. IIRC, at that point Mr. Humphries indicated this would not be appropriate, and made some reference to his liking women.

So the ultimate irony is that the most "homosexual" character turned out to be straight, at least as far as we could tell from his admissions.

Everything I read and heard about was kept ambiguous at best.

Nice.
