Heavy Fuel Oil Spills Off New York Harbor
PERTH AMBOY, N.J. (AP) - Up to 30,700 gallons of heavy fuel oil spilled into a waterway off New York Harbor on Monday while the cargo was being transferred from a barge to a Chevron plant, authorities said. The Coast Guard and spill-response companies set up booms to contain the oil, floating on the Arthur Kill between Perth Amboy and New York's Staten Island. The oil escaped during a transfer of about 1.5 million gallons of oil from a barge, the Coast Guard said. The cause was under investigation.

Coast Guard officials said Chevron assumed responsibility for the spill and contracted with two companies to help with the cleanup.Chevron representatives did not immediately respond to calls for comment.

3. Not that much oil...
I'm sure they have it contained with booms.

These oil cleanup companies do a fairly good job.

4. I sure hope you are right.
It's not the cleanest water to begin with. They are just starting to see the results of the environmental work that has gone on in this area after 20+ years.

7. My grandfather had invented a doohickey to clean up oil spills but when
he asked Muskie to help him register the patent he got blown off and one of the oil companies beat him to it. :(

8. here is more
New Jersey - WABC, February 13, 2006) - An unknown amount of heavy crude oil has spilled into the waters of the Arthur Kill between NJ and Staten Island.
Newscopter Seven's John Delgiorno was live over the sceneThe oil spill was first spotted just north of the outerbridge crossing earlier this morning by a few passing tugboats. It was later confirmed by a NYC police department helicopter.
.Authorities believe that the spill consists of heavy crude oil and originated from a Chevron facility in Seawaren on the New Jersey side of the Arthur Kill. It may have occurred during the transfer of 35,000 barrels of heavy crude oil from a barge to the Chevron facility on the mainland.Authorities and the Coast Guard are trying to contain the spill but traces of it are visible in Arthur Kill as far north as Fresh Kill.
