Scott McClellan's mom running for office as an independent
Texas GOP Comptroller Runs As Independent

By APRIL CASTRO
Associated Press Writer

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Texas Comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn turned her back on the Republican Party and announced Monday she will run for governor as an independent.

The move allows Strayhorn to escape a potentially ugly primary battle against Gov. Rick Perry. The GOP primary is set for March 7.

Strayhorn, who calls herself "One Tough Grandma," has been a harsh critic of Perry's leadership over the past couple of years. Monday's announcement all but guarantees Perry will be the Republican candidate on the November ballot.

Snip>

One of Strayhorn's sons, Scott McClellan, is President Bush's press secretary, and another son, Dr. Mark McClellan, is administrator of the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

8. I think because Gov. Good Hair Perry was kicking her ass in the polls
and Perry and Strayhorn can't stand each other.

4. Another rightwing wacko pretending to be a moderate independent ..
.. in an effort to suck votes away from the Democratic nominee.

Look! She's a rightwing Democratic wacko! No, wait! Now, she's a rightwing Republican wacko! No, wait! Now, she's a rightwing independent wacko!

5. Her radio ads...
... start off with some headline like, "The Texas Conservative Minute with Carol Keaton Strayhorn..." or some such nonsense. I'm not sure she's going to be confused with any Democrats around here. Besides, Democrats in Texas are intelligent, it's the repugs that are the mindless morons. I agree that the independent choice is to avoid slick Rick and save her money for the election, not the primary.

6. Strayhorn sees crossovers as primary target
Gubernatorial candidate urging Democrats to help her beat Perry

... Yet, her hunt for voters outside the party's base appears to recognize that the incumbent has the edge among Republican loyalists, who are often more conservative than the general electorate.

Last month, Strayhorn visited the heavily Democratic Rio Grande Valley to blast a possible toll-road project as a government land grab. She also encouraged crowd members to participate in the GOP primary, a pitch first reported by the McAllen Monitor newspaper. Texas has open primaries, meaning that voters can decide on primary day to participate in any party's election but must choose one ...

Perry's pollster, Mike Baselice, hailed Strayhorn's crossover message as helping Perry ...

7. She can't decide on ANYTHING
When I left here four years ago, she was Carole Keeton Strayhorn. She's also been Carole Keeton McClellan, obviously, and now she's Carole Keeton Rylander. Now she's deserted TWO parties (both she and Rick are former Dems, like every other Texas Republican).

I HATED her 'One tough Grammmmma' thing back in 1998 or whenever, and I hate her now, too. I was once trapped in an elevator with her at the Capitol and she was loudly munching on potato chips and barking at her staff. And I also don't trust anyone who would raise a child to be the mouthpiece of this misadministration.

But I don't much like Goodhair, either. Not that I would ever vote Republican. I am confused, though, as to who Carole thinks her supporters are. She will never be in with the Republican leadership again, don't you think? Having stabbed Rick 'If you don't vote for Bush, you're not a real Texan' Perry in the backcombing. And I don't know a single person, Democrat or Republican who doesn't have strong negative feelings about her. She's largely seen as an opportunist and a nasty piece of work, I think. Who does she think she is to run as an independent?

I predict doom.
