Whittington thought he was headed to the morgue after the shooting!
But it was a "minor injury" :eyes:

<snip>

Whittington was in stable condition at Christus Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi-Memorial. His daughter said after he was shot, the 78-year-old Republican supporter was unsure whether he was being taken to the hospital or the morgue.

1. Why was he in intensive care for a "minor" injury?
I'm waiting for the press to research this one. I think it will be a long wait.

Most VIPs go to intensive care whether or not their injury or illness
requires it because ICUs are generally locked wards these days, meaning nobody from the press can don scrubs and get in with a linen cart. They have to know the code that opens the door.

Once adequate security is established, the VIP can then move to a private room on a general floor.

However, a face and chest shot in any 78 year old man is going to be pretty serious.

11. True, but this appears to be a bit more than that.
The first hospital he was sent to evaluated his wounds and transferred him immediately to a hospital equipped with a Trauma Center. Had the injuries merely required intensive care and a stay in the ICU, the first hospital had that covered. Yet, they sent him to a Trauma Center.

7. Vice President stands by decision to shoot elderly attorney in face
"...tonight the Vice President is standing by his decision to shoot Harry Whittington.
Now according to the best intelligence available, there were quail hidden in the brush.
Everyone believed at the time-there-were-quail in the brush. And while the quail turned
out to be the 78 year old man. Even knowing that today, Mr. Cheney insists-he still
would have shot Mr. Whittington in the face."

13. Yep, he was sent to the ICU because
I'm not a doctor, but I slept at a Holiday Inn Express last night...

It was necessary to send Whittington to the ICU because of the risk trauma induced shock - a life threatening condition. While birdshot pellets are tiny, each of them can produce a localized area in which tissue is pulverized and blood pools and clots under the skin. Multiplied by dozens, or potentially hundreds of pellets, and you've got a potentially life-threatening trauma and accompanying shock.

23. Plus, tiny birdshot pellets can enter the bloodstream and cause a CLOT.
It is rare, but it does happen.

5. Odd. I believe - duh - that he was injured worse than anyone is
willing to admit - but I also wonder if the man didn't also suffer some sort of "episode" with his heart. The stress of being shot - combined with his age, you know?

somewhere, that they were leaving some of the shot or pellets, whatever you call them, in place? If they just went in a little, why would they do that?

25. It depends.
Cheney might have used steel shot, as lead shot is illegal in many states. I don't know what he used, but leaving lead in someone doesn't sound that great.

17. Yes. I read that as well. Leaving some in...
Had a friend who had gravel under his skin after a wreck - the doctors got out most but left some because it was too far under the skin and would "eventually work itself out" - You could literally feel the gravel when you rubbed his arm. And every now and then a piece would break the skin from the inside

Maybe the pellets are that way too....too far under the skin.

seems some of the short - or shot - worked it's way into his heart muscles.

When he was "peppered" (blasted), the pellets (pieces) entered the flesh & blood stream - and often times, pellet pieces will continue to work their way farther and farther in.. they will also work themselves out - breaking the skin on their way out after the skin has already grown over

edit to add: but I really was just wondering if the "shock" of it all caused him to have a heart attack...I knew the "pellets" could dig in, so to speak - but I just kinda thought maybe he had a heart attack as well and they were covering that fact up.

32. Definitely
Obstructing a police investigation
not properly licensed
no alcohol/drug screening
and I'm sure there's more

The crux is - it was probably an accident - yet Cheney just point blank refuses to take any responsibility for his actions - he's above the law - so he refuses to be questioned by the police for a statement. He runs from the scene as soon as possible. He skulks back to DC and hides from the Press. ...in short - it's the cover up.

Now they have to worry if Whit is a team player or not.

Will he be telling his version or our version of what happened?

15. Homeland Security Unveils New Alert System
HOMELAND SECURITY DEPARTMENT UNVEILS CHENEY ALERT SYSTEM
Color-coded System Would Warn Nation of Future Attacks by Veep

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff announced today that his department would immediately implement a “Cheney Alert” system to warn Americans if an attack by Vice President Dick Cheney is imminent.

The Department of Homeland Security has been under pressure to respond to the widespread panic and anxiety that have gripped the nation since Mr. Cheney shot and wounded a fellow quail hunter while on a hunting trip in Texas over the weekend.

Across the country, people have holed up in their homes and hoarded food and water, fearing another senseless attack by the gun-toting vice president.

“What we have learned, the hard way, is that Dick Cheney can attack without warning,” Mr. Chertoff said. “It is our hope that with this Cheney Alert system we will be able to give the American people some warning before he strikes again.”

22. I wouldn't be surprised if they really did consider that.

But they probably realized the shot pattern of the pellets was to big to be fired from close range and thus discounted "self-inflicted" as a cause.
