in Arkansas pasture. They are sinking in the mud, they have to buy 44,000 jacks to lift each of the 11,000 trailers. This was just on CNN. At the beginning of the story FEMA was buying MORE trailers.

2. It's like throwing money into a toilet and watching it go down the
sewer, while no one benefits. I heard this on CSPAN yesterday; it's a disgrace!

4. Is that in addition to the $900,000,000 they spent buying 26,000 trailers?
That was reported yesterday.

They must be nice trailers if they cost $36K.

Or FEMA is overpaying for them...

10. From the NYT
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/02/14/national/nationalspecial/14katrina.html?pagewanted=all

snip
Only about 2,700 of the 25,000 mobile homes ordered at a cost of $850 million have been installed, and at least 10,000 are sitting in Hope, Ark., according to documents and statements from Federal Emergency Management Agency officials. Though about 55,000 Louisiana families are still waiting for a manufactured housing unit, the mobile homes may never be used because FEMA regulations prohibit them from being installed in flood-prone coastal areas, federal officials said

Sickening isn't it? I've heard too (I can't remember from where) that the ones they have in LA don't have electricity. Unbelievable.

15. Well,
yes.

Just about. Cheap pine and aluminum framing, aluminum and plastic, 1/2" plywood floors.

Nothing deteriorates faster than an unoccupied trailer.

Yep. Saw them a a couple of weeks ago.
They have them parked at the Hope airport. Thousands of them....

What's really odd about it is FEMA has the place gated off as if were a military comppound. I've been meaning to go back and get some shots of them but now I'm worried that Cheney might be out there on point somewhere...

We not just talking a waste,...we're looking at demolishing $300M of taxpayer-paid goods. It's insane.

13. I watched the hearing yesterday with the show and tell of those mobile
homes and it was disgusting that these potential homes were left to rot the way they were. It is estimated that they will eventually be sold for pennies on the dollar.

14. Some bright boy in DC decided that trailers was just what was
needed, but having never lived in one the dumbass didn't realize you have to have electric/sewer hookups. Otherwise it's just a well-furnished box. You can't place a trailer just anywhere - it's got to have the infrastructure. So they were never used.

Morans. White-collar, fucking MBA morans.

by them just yesterday afternoon so they are not just in Arkansas. It's amazing how many people were desperate for these trailers and finally gave up and now they are all just sitting around not being used.

Let's not forget the fiasco of renting the entire cruise ship and paying more per person than they would have paid for a 7 day cruise. I think that for a short time about 25% of the cruise ship was used. I think it figured to a little less than $500,000 per person for the charge. Has anyone seen the exact figure for this? I think I remember reading it somewhere.

17. I think we should commandeere the fucking things and take
them in a line for miles across country dropping them at any available dry spot and say here to all Katrina victims without a home, but first verify the victim status.
