Dear Paul, although I am a resident of a different state, I was your supporter from Day 1 as being a boon to the Democratic Party. I understand the bitterness that could result from being bigfooted, but I sincerely hope that Democratic core principles will overcome this. In 1972 I wrote to George McGOVERN and said I admired him for his idealism but that the first principle was to BEAT NIXON and that I wished he would withdraw in favor of somebody who had a better chance of doing that. He responded graciously and humbly, but of course did not listen. Unfortunately, our system is a winner-takes-all, and ALL of our losing Dems over the years have been better, more intelligent, more noble, more servants-of-the-people, as are you, than the Republicans who beat them. Please don't turn against the Democratic Party. I wish you wouldn't say "never" either. Hoping to support you again, (signoff).

You basically said to him: you couldn't win anyway, so it's a good thing you got forced out.
Insulting on several levels -- to him personally, to him as a vet (and all our other vets running), to the democratic process.
Disappointing.
