FLASH: Whittington heart attack totally unrelated to shooting
CORPUS CHRISTI - Doctors commenting on the Whittington case say it is virtually impossible that his minor wounds from being peppered with shotgun pellets could have caused any heart trauma. "Whittington only this morning was doing the hokey pokey with the nursing staff, telling jokes and carrying on. We believe that his heart attack is probably his own doing from undertaking too strenuous of an activity schedule for a man his age, along with residual damage done by years of cigarette smoking and cocaine use." . . . .

5. Exactly! "Oh, it was Harry's time......"
and the fact that Cheney shot him? oh, hell, just a coincidence!

but you know, I wonder what catching a shotgun blast, partially at least in the face, does to your heart rate and blood pressure. Ditto a fast trip to a hospital in an ambulance.....but I'm SURE it would have nothing to do with the heart attack...

His mother was accidentally shot while pregnant as she mistakenly crossed a hunting range in Kansas, you know.

Barbara Bush weighs in:

"He was going to have a heart attack anyway so getting him to the hospital ahead of time worked out well for him."

Hell, Dick probably saved his live by shooting him. :sarcasm:

The ability to deny any responsibility and spin this to their avantage is truly mind boggling. They live in an alternate reality.

11. Doctor's statement
Edited on Tue Feb-14-06 04:03 PM by Richard D
OUSTON (Reuters) - The Texas lawyer accidentally shot by U.S. Vice President
Dick Cheney during a weekend quail hunt suffered a minor heart attack on Tuesday when some of the birdshot still in his body lodged near his heart, a hospital spokesman said.

Harry Whittington, 78, was moved into intensive care and ordered to stay in the Corpus Christi, Texas, hospital for at least another seven days to monitor his condition, said Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital spokesman Peter Banko.

Dr. David Blanchard, the hospital's emergency room chief, said at a news conference doctors noted an irregular heartbeat during a morning examination of Whittington and it was determined he was having a minor heart attack.

He was moved into the hospital's intensive care unit and underwent cardiac catheterization for his quivering heart.

"We picked up an irregular heartbeat. At no time did he have any chest pain, the classic signs of a heart attack or anything like that," Blanchard said.

Doctors and officials had assured the press that Whittington suffered only minor wounds, but Blanchard said on Tuesday, "We knew he had some birdshot very near to the heart from the get-go."

At least one of those pellets had gotten close enough to the heart to cause "irritability," which led to Tuesday's heart attack, he said.

Blanchard said doctors would have to keep a close eye on the birdshot in case it continues to move.

Trauma surgeon Soumitra Eachempati at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weil Cornell Medical Center said the moving pellet could require an operation.

"Since the pellet just moved into the heart area, it might be necessary to do open heart surgery," he said.

23. Well, if they do open heart surgery the man is probably a goner.
Then of course the fweepers and the White House will blame the medical staff for incompetence. "Nothing to do with us, no, sir, it's those damn doctors and that high malpractice insurance they have to pay that kept them from concentrating properly. It wasn't Cheney's mistake that killed Whittington, it was the operating team's."

Jeez. Can you imagine the strain of being Whittington's attending physician?

of the pellets that hit close by his heart.

So what's the truth?

17. you TOTALLY had me going there
I saw the part about Whittington doing the hokey pokey with the nursing staff and rolled my eyes--great, more of that crap like how he was joking with everybody on Saturday. The hokey pokey is equally lame and stupid so I believed it was also from a real statement.

If you hadn't stuck that "years of cocaine use" in at the end, I'd have fallen for it. (Well, that and the dripping sarcasm thingy.)

19. Flash # 2: Falling from great heights won't hurt you.
It's the sudden stop that does it.

(Unless your heart is weakened by, for example, a shotgun pellet, in which case you may have heart failure during the fall.)

27. No, you're right...
The guy could easily have a heart attack because of the stress, because of a pellet, for some other reason, or because of a combination of them.

I wish him a speedy recovery however, I've worked with the elderly all my life and an incident like this is going to be very difficult to come back from.O8)

Maybe it was a spot of bad mustard or an undercooked potato... those wacky senior citizens, can't take em anywhere without a minor heart attack.
