Another hunting accident
No charges were filed.

LAFAYETTE, Colo. -- A 17-year-old girl who was not familiar with firearms accidentally shot her boyfriend while the two were hunting raccoons at a Boulder County farmhouse Monday night.

The sheriff's office said the incident was reported at about 9:30 p.m. in the 2300 block of North 95th Street, north of the Lafayette city limits.

They found Josh Kayser, 21, wounded in the right ear and left forearm by a .22-caliber rifle man's girlfriend was holding for him. Kayser told investigators that he was crouched down, peering under a shed, looking for a wounded raccoon while his girlfriend was crouched down behind him with the loaded rifle when it accidentally discharged.

12. They're a nuisance out here.
I live about 3 miles from the location described, and my husband used to work at the closest intersection. It's recently-developed farm land and open space, and there's a couple of big farms out there.

I've had 'coons the size of schnauzers on my back porch, and the damn things are BRAZEN. I had one try to attack me in my own back yard because it apparently thought I was in its territory. (Note: I live in an old neighborhood - my house has been here since the 20s. This area develops in patches and the county philosophy is to preserve farms and open space as much as possible.)

They're too smart for no-kill traps, and we don't allow regular traps in County limits.

2. In this case I DO blame the victim!
I don't care if he was only 21 or not, the first thing he should have done was teach this girl gun safety! It shouldn't take a LONG time, and he really should have know better!

10. I guess if you have a gun you must kill something, or shoot at it,
Some people love guns and killing things. Some times it is nice to just watch deer and birds. It is not as if any one needs to kill these things to live.

11. I have several guns, and I haven't killed a thing in decades
In fact the last animal I killed deliberately was a fish, and that was twenty years ago. I don't fish anymore, more because I don't trust the water that they're living in than out of any sympathy for the fish. I won't do any catch and release, I think that it is cruel to the fish, and often results in the fish's death anyway.

As far as guns go, I go out once in awhile and shoot some targets or clays just to stay in practice, but it has been over twenty five years since I've hunted. But hey, I've still got several guns. And I go out and watch the deer and wildlife out in my back forty all the time. I even feed the birds, they're fun to watch, and my cats agree.
