Harvard study blasts Bush education policy

By Jason Szep Tue Feb 14, 12:30 AM ET

BOSTON (Reuters) -

President George W. Bush's signature education policy has in some cases benefited white middle-class children over blacks and other minorities in poorer regions, a Harvard University study showed on Tuesday.

Political compromises forged between some states and the federal government has allowed schools in some predominantly white districts to dodge penalties faced by regions with larger ethnic minority populations, the study said.

Bush's 2001 No Child Left Behind Act was meant to introduce national standards to an education system where only two-thirds of teenagers graduate from high school, a proportion that slides to 50 percent for black Americans and Hispanics.

But instead of uniform standards, the policy has allowed various states to negotiate treaties and bargains to reduce the number of schools and districts identified as failing, said the study by Harvard University's Civil Rights Project.

2. The counselor at my school who voted for *
told me just today that she now thinks NCLB is "criminal". What took her over the edge? That budget with all the defense spending.

3. this education BS is NOTHING SHORT of a deliberate attempt to
destroy public education in the US, and replace it with religiously based, fundamentalist maniacs

think I'm crazy? check out your local school boards. who are the ones campaigning via the Ralph Reed stealth route

it's going to take awhile to do what they did with their faux grass roots campaign, but they started with the think tanks, and 'grassroots' campaigns at the local and state levels in the early 70s. that culminated in the 94 elections

look at the way things are now

I work in a jr. high school that's about to be taken over by the state because of our failures in TWO subgroups, out of god knows how many: we're the 'most culturally diverse' jr. high school in the state...over 20 languages spoken, lots of section 8 housing, large bi-lingual population, and we're in a fairly affluent Chicago suburb

this is what they are PLANNING on happening

look up Christian Reconstructionism/Dominionism

it's been discussed a lot here

it's MUCH worse than you think
