Was Cheney using "salted loads"? Doc says 5mm shot caused.. |
|
the heart problem.
#7 1/2 shot- 2.41mm #9 shot 2.03mm
#1 or #2 approach 5mm. That is about the size of a standard BB. These are sometimes "salted" into birdshot for serious knock-down power. They will mess you up at 1295 feet per second. Some deep penetration with that size shot. Of course, they could have been factory loads which can contain some fused shot but I doubt it in this situation. They were probably using brass casings.
Lead or steel? Anyone hear?

I've heard both.
30 yrds. 30 feet.
Nothing they've said makes any sense to anyone.
They've been out of touch with reality for so long, they don't even know how to lie anymore.
Assholes.

Most high-dollar shoots I have been on used brass, and.... |
|
Edited on Tue Feb-14-06 09:22 PM by TomInTib
we always used them on hand-loads for both longevity and consistency reasons.
If one wants to pick nits, one can also make the compression argument. Theories vary on this point but I have always thought brass delivers more punch.
on edit:
I should have written "high brass".

Brass shot cartridges pretty well went out with black powder. Do you mean High brass which denotes a more powerful load than the standard field loads ( low brass)?

15. I misspoke. In Texas we just called it "shooting brass". |
|
Maks a noticeable diference at close range in a smaller bore.

You must be a hunter or have been around some.
Notice how Cheney is wearng hearing protectors (muffs) in the pics?
Ever wear THOSE in the field? Me either. Canned birds.
He would not have heard the guy if he had been screaming.
Also read an article from NYTimes where DeadEye shot 70 ring-necked pheasants in one morning in a canned hunt in PA a couple of years ago. 70. What a psycho.
I have also been hit (in the back) with #7 1/2 (20 gauge) at 35 yds by a total idiot. Planted face down. I thought I had been hit by one of our bulls.

and am probably one of the few posters to this site with an associates degree in small arms technology (gunsmithing). Muffs are great for large bore shooting on the range but I would never have used them while hunting. Hunting Gambles here in the desert you need all your senses, cause rattlers don't wear orange.

Edited on Tue Feb-14-06 09:20 PM by skip fox
That would explain the reticence on the part of the press spokespersons.
They would hate to hear Dems shouting that Cheney shoots people in the backs as he does the facts (WMDs, Iraqs relation to terrorism, etc.).

19. Nothing "wingless" about them! |
|
A spooked quail comes up out of the scrub like a rocket. Small shot is used on quail because they are hard to hit, and it takes a dense shot pattern to get consistent hits. "Salting" a load with a few larger pellets would be counterproductive.

17. 5 millimeters is about a quarter of an inch |
|
For reference, an unpopped piece of popcorn is about that size. It would be a lot heavier than popcorn, whether made of lead or steel.

20. Only a 'real' hunter uses his own reloads...Cheney ain't real |
|
Probably some stud from the ranch bunkhouse loaded a few hot loads and laid them on Cheney. Cheney thought the ranch hand was jabbing him about his no salt diet when the kid winked and said they were 'salted'.
Oh, the standard lead BB shot is .180" (4.57mm) and is still used by some crazy reloaders in Northern California for wild turkey.
