How do Muslims know this is the image of Mohammad?

One of the things I have been curious about in recent days, concerning all of the rioting over the Mo cartoons, is how do Muslims know this is the correct of Mo? It would seem to me if Islam prohibits depictions of Mo then how has anyone ever seen a picture of him to know that these cartoons are actually Mo and not just some arab guy?

and also was the same God that Rome had around so holidays and their Gods were just used in place of ones that were not legal. That English is really wild but I hope you see what I mean. Christians just took over things that were going on and made them theirs. I am not sure why we have had fights about this but even the Christians have had some big fights on it in history. I think it split the Church in Rome at one time. Didn't they move the head of the Church to Fr. at one time over all this? It has been years, about 50, since I had world history. I need help here.
