Lay and Hastert to jail?
I bet they will. The guy who was on Tweety said Hastert took 20 million dollars to distribute as he liked. If that is true, he is going to jail. And Delay, he should go just for being an asshole and a republican.

2. I wonder if anyone is keeping tabs on all this "supposed" returned money?
They say they're donating to charity, is anyone doing a follow-up to make sure it happens?

7. All of the creatures caught with their hands in the cookie jar....
are suddenly having a change of heart. :eyes: Too little too late guys. Your names are already indelibly imprinted into the fabric of this scandal, giving back the filthy lucre won't mean a thing in the court of public opinion.
I'm sure this scandal is going to take a few Democrats down with it as well, but it's what our government direly needs. The special interests and corporate overlords have too long had their reign over our country. It's time to expunge the power merchants from our government and it can't come soon enough for me!

24. Isn't Hasert already in investigation?
I remember someone posted about him in Vanity Fair with Sibel Edmonds and she was talking about how he's already under investigation for aligning with Turkish groups that could be terrorist's to protect them.

Edited on Tue Jan-03-06 06:24 PM by calipendence
He's had a lot of money from the Turks for the Armenian "non-resolution" payoff. Is he going to tell us who he gives that money back to? Oop? Can't trace who gave those contributions. Too bad he says! I get to keep that stuff!

20. You just got me thinking.

Perhaps Congressman Adam Schiff should get an email about that.

He's got an Armenian constituency that would love to hear about Hastert quashin' resolutions.

25. Looks like the Village Voice won't let him "pass" on the Armenian question
Just released an article that dovetails the Turkish contributions issues with the Abramoff one he's trying to "correct"!

Abramoff Lobbying Scandal: Big Timber Falls Hard
Hastert on tainted money: Okay, okay, I'll give it back

by James Ridgeway
January 4th, 2006 10:11 AM

WASHINGTON, D.C.--With leaders of both parties compromised in the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal, questions now center around Republican Dennis Hastert, speaker of the House, who yesterday shed himself of tainted campaign contributions totaling $70,000. He gave the money to an unspecified charity.

In November of last year, the Washington Post described a fundraiser, held by Hastert, at one of Abramoff's restaurants. The party yielded Hastert $21,500 for his political action committee. While several lawmakers who received money from the fundraiser had already returned it, only yesterday did Hastert come forward.

"The speaker believes that while these contributions were legal, it is appropriate to donate the money to charity," a spokesman for the Illinois Republican, Ron Bonjean, said.

Hastert, often viewed as a weak Speaker and little more than a frontpiece for indicted majority leader Tom Delay, recently was linked to another potential political campaign scandal. Vanity Fair last fall ran an article in which Sibel Edmonds, the former FBI translator blocked by a government gag order from telling what she knows about the FBI operations around the time of 9-11, describes how, in her days as an FBI interpreter, she ran across wiretaps of Turkish officials discussing campaign contributions to various politicians, including Hastert.

6. Pity we have to rely on the honor of Republicans, not the rule of law
If there is no honor among thieves, there can't be much among conservative Republicans, who only enforce the laws they like.

Abramoff tribes donated funds to lawmakers (Hastert rec'd 100K+)

http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/T/TRIBES_LETTERS__...

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Nearly three dozen members of Congress, including leaders from both parties, pressed the government to block a Louisiana Indian tribe from opening a casino while the lawmakers collected large donations from rival tribes and their lobbyist, Jack Abramoff.

Many intervened with letters to Interior Secretary Gale Norton within days of receiving money from tribes represented by Abramoff or using the lobbyist's restaurant for fundraising, an Associated Press review of campaign records, IRS records and congressional correspondence found.

<snip>

The Abramoff donations dwarf those made by Keating. At least 33 lawmakers wrote letters to Norton and got more than $830,000 in Abramoff-related donations as the lobbying unfolded between 2001 and 2004, AP found.

<snip>

Hastert ultimately collected more than $100,000 in donations from Abramoff's firm and tribal clients between 2001 and 2004. His office said he never discussed the matter with Abramoff, but long opposed expanding Indian gambling off reservations and was asked to send the letter by Rep. Jim McCrery, R-La.
