Poll question: Dan Savage wants to know - Are we behind a new word campaign?
Edited on Wed Feb-15-06 01:10 PM by Book Lover
In this week's Savage Love, Dan Savage printed this letter and his reply:

Q. Listening to pundits discuss George W. Bush on the radio, I was inspired by your brilliant acronym (DTMFA) to yell, "Impeach the Motherfucker Already!" I'd love to see a line of bumper stickers and T-shirts bearing that sensible message: ITMFA. We need a shorthand for the obvious—think of the boost to productivity we'd get if we could cut half-hour conversations about Bush to five simple letters! I appeal to you to bring this acronym into our everyday vocabulary! —Dumped My Motherfucker Already

A. I've resisted all previous calls to launch new santorum-style campaigns, DMMA, but your suggestion appeals to me. It takes a lot to lift my spirits these days— knowing Bush is going to be in office for three more fucking years makes every day a gloomy one—but contemplating the sight of ITMFA buttons, T-shirts, lapel pins, and bumper stickers definitely lifted my spirits. But I need to consult my readers. While I get all the credit for launching santorum the substance, it was a reader who suggested a contest and another who suggested the winning definition. My readers made Rick Santorum what he is today—an international laughingstock. So I put it to those readers: Should Savage Love get behind a campaign to popularize ITMFA? Would you wear buttons? T-shirts? Lapel pins? Would you help push the website to number one on Google? Would you put ITMFA bumper stickers on your cars?

Well, fellow DUers, let's help Dan out. What do you think?

3. I can't afford 12, but I could afford more than one. *shrug*
He hit on one of my personal favorite approaches, though -- making Chucklenuts & Co. an international laughingstock (even more so than they are now). Nothing irks people like the neocon crowd more than being laughed at. So you BET I'm behind an ITMFA campaign -- I'll buy bumperstickers, coffee cups, lapel pins, buttons, mouse pads, glow-in-the-dark condoms, you name it!

(I'm sure there's a special group of cells at Gitmo reserved for snarky smartass non-boosh-worshippers. I figure I'll be in good company.)

8. Wow, I'm the first "No" vote
I read Dan Savage regularly. He's one of my favorite columnists. I'm 100% in favor of impeachment, too.

The trouble is that pushing the cause by using profanity (even if not spelled out) is going to alienate the people we need to reach. The RW spin machine would deflect attention from the genuine grounds for impeachment, and create a phony issue about declining morality, what kind of example is being set for America's youth, blah blah blah. They could even, with some justice, charge hypocrisy on the part of anyone who criticized Cheney's language to Leahy. (Yes, I know, the context makes Cheney's comment more offensive. But do we want to be arguing about that instead of about illegal wiretapping?)

Eyes on the prize, folks. We'll feel good if we vent but it's not a smart strategy.
