The two key Cheney-gate questions |
|
I think it behooves us to boil down the Cheney-gate discussion into concise media talking points or questions for the media to ask, as regards Cheney shooting Whittington.
Here are my nominations for two key questions
1) Was alcohol consumed before the hunting party began? Was alcohol consumed during the hunting party?
2) Why did the Secret Service turn away the local deputies?

1. The answer to number 2 is because the answer to number 1 is yes. |

was a distinct possibility.
But the real question is: where will this go? The American public doesn't seem to care about a drunk President, so why are they going to care about a drunk vice-president? More important, to my way of thinking, neither of these two men are ever going to run for public office again. How can we turn this to our advantage this November?

5. Hmm, I was thinking about a sign I saw the other day . . . |
|
"Impeach Cheney First". We want him out before November so that, if Bush is impeached following mid-terms, Cheney won't succeed him.
Or am I mising something?

the way it's got to be done. But can we do it? I've seen no signs that we can.

4. Note that question 1 is a two-parter. |
|
Knowing what I know about "good ole boys" and the culture of hunting and drinking, I think there's a very strong possibility that they were drinking while they were hunting, not 5 hours before-hand (as just reported by MSNBC).
In Southwest Missouri (where I grew up), it was customary during quail- and duck-hunting season(s) for alcohol to be an intimate partner to hunting. By intimate, I mean that hunters drank while hunting and anyone from you can tell that a large number of hunting "accidents" have some alcohol component.
If they were drinking and hunting at the same time, doesn't this approach the same characteristics we associate with drinking and driving?

accident involved, it is the same as having an accident while driving drunk. But since we have now and never will have any proof of this, it is a moot point.

9. "we have now and never will have any proof of this" |

Hmm, I guess I would respond that "The truth always prevails," but maybe the important thing is to keep asking the question, not to get definitive proof.

11. Yes, I'd like for this community to coalesce around 2-3 |
|
critical questions that we can keep asking, to keep the story going.
I welcome other suggestions.

I think that is the reason it took 18 - 24 hours to announce the incident to the public.....Cheney would rather be confronted with questions about the delay than answer questions about what he was doing spending the weekend in a house with two women who were not his lesbian wife!
