Shotgunfreude
Edited on Wed Feb-15-06 06:11 PM by wakemewhenitsover
No good Democrat is happy when a 78-year-old man is critically injured, for any reason.

So why did our hearts collectively sing when we first heard this news?

There's a German term: schadenfreude. It means, "happiness about the misfortune of others."

But this goes far beyond that. Today Dick Cheney said, it was "one of the worst days of my life." "I'm the guy who pulled the trigger that fired the round that hit Harry."

Dick Cheney is 65 years old. Has this notorious chicken-hawk ever given one single moment of thought to how many "worst days of their lives" countless 20-somethings have suffered because they thought they were going to war justifiably (Iraq was the reason for 9/11, Iraq had weapons of mass destruction), only to find out it was all a hoax, and now maybe they know they've killed an innocent Iraqi citizen, or maybe their buddy was killed or maimed before their very eyes, and these kids will never be the same, and of course we're talking about the ones still lucky enough to be alive -- has he given one moment of thought to how many "worst days of their lives" the parents of the ones not lucky enough to still be alive have endured, maybe every day for the rest of their lives will be the worst day of their life, but the likes of Dick Cheney will ridicule Cindy Sheehan, who raised an Eagle Scout son who was duped into dying for a hoax.

The hypocrisy is excruciating, and the media buys into it all, and elections are stolen, and will continue to be stolen, and the Democratic Party becomes the party of countless missed opportunities, but one day we wake up to find that Dick Cheney has actually shot his friend in the face... and that it was one of the worst days of his life. (Though probably not as bad as the day some innocent being tortured in Gitmo is having.)

So of course we feel "shotgunfreude", as we wonder if the neocons will simply self-destruct, and we pray they will not take the rest of us with them.

5. YES YES!! I had a discussion today and brought up that point!
We (my progressive friends and I) decided that we sympathize more with those families of people that are dead because of the decisions by Bush and Cheney. They make a great "death then song and dance" couple. Hard to sympathize with them when their decisions killed so many before this weekend, and now we sympathize with this decision?

NO!!!

Funny, any criticism from the Right usually fits one of these 1930's Germany used definitions.

Very clever. Now I'll go read the OP...

On edit (now I've read it): You raise some good points there. I agree: the way Cheney has handled this is extremely hypocritical. His remarks yesterday were designed to elicit our sympathy, but as you say, he has shown little sympathy for others.

And as far as the shotgunfreude of those on the left, well, the Cheney people in so many ways brought that upon themselves, when they released reports that seemed to indicate that the accident produced no serious injuries at all. That's what opened the door to all the jokes. Had people known from the first that the victim had been seriously injured, there may not have been as many jokes.

18. I think hypocrisy is the root of the shotgunfreude.
We all empathize with anyone who's injured; however, how much injury has been done to our democracy by a hypocritical administration that demands sympathy without ever evincing any true compassion?
