10. I've heard stupidity spouted in the past about....
a "lack of training".

I've never been trained as any sort of guard, but I know enough not to drag a prisoner out of their cell and torture them, especially against the orders or "culture" of those above me. :sarcasm:

Scumbag. Hope the inmates on his cell block are having some fun with him.

of these victims committed no crime and were later released.

This has nothing to do with fighting terrorism.

terrorist suspects routinely to secret prisons in Europe, we have a firm policy against torture. What you saw in the photos is just the work of some few misguided and untrained Guardsmen. Sadly, things like this happen in wartime. Fear not! The Army has thoroughly investigated the matter and thankfully determined that these actions went no higher than the actual perpetrators. All offenders have been prosecuted. Their acts were regrettable but now all Americans can relax because there is no longer any problem with torture.

As our President says, "We do not torture!" (But although we don't do it, we still could if we wanted to under ample Constitutional authority under the President's War-Making Powers. Just ask Justice Alito).

Feel better?

ps "HUGH" is not expressive of popular sentiment

19. Just curious...how many of the 51%ers who voted to put this junta back
into office do you think have a problem with this? The ones in my family (and that really hurts and is disgusting) and the Bush** supporters that I come into contact with really don't have a problem with doing this to 'the bad guys' and they don't want to hear the facts that a large percentage of these people were ordinary citizens.

30. No, I really would like to know.
Seriously, I'm in my area of my state and one of reasons that I come to DU is to try to get a feel for what people in other areas and other states and countries are experiencing, feeling, thinking, having reported to them in their papers, tv news broadcasts, etc. and it isn't an idle question I really would like to know.

32. I think that
I obviously cannot give you an accurate percentage but I will do my best in providing an answer for you (my opinion, at least).

I think that Bush supporting males fall into two categories.

The first group believes that torture is ok because "those guys over there are just a bunch of barbarians who do not understand anything else." Half of these male Bush supporters would probably say something along the lines of "we should do it to them because they'd do it to us." Thus, in other words, who care's, it's war, shit happens, war is hell, do anything to win, etc. This group consists of people ranging from "ordinary" individuals who speak irrationally about situations they do not understand nor have they suffered through and outright bigots or guys who think everything the USA does is right because it's my country and Bush in my party.

The second group of Bush supporting males do not like torture but they view it as somethign that needs to be done. They turn a blind eye to what's going on or say something like, "That's not right," but have no real outrage about the situation.

The majority of Bush supporting females more than likely put torture out of their minds. These individuals turn the channel when the media examines the sins of our country or they simply tune out. The remainder of women (a small percentage) think along the same lines as the first group I described.

In all, I would not be surprised if about 85-90% of all Bush supporters see no problem with the torture pictures.

that the focus of rage on Cheney for an accidental shooting would make the Democrats look bad, yet again. But if this turns out to be the straw that starts to bring down the house of cards in the White House (sorry for confusing metaphors...having my own beer, hehehe) then it will be damn well worth the effort.

24. First, the economic barons exploited people. Then, when the people,...
,...and/or their leaders failed to succumb to such oppression, the barbarians were called in.

The foregoing is a nutshell of U.S.A. foreign policy for decades. Now, the world will rebel and the U.S. corporacrats will bankrupt our nation to get what they want.

It's not going to get better.

28. I haven't managed to look at them yet
I saw the others, I know what's being done under the guise of "fighting terrorist."

I'll look at these, also, but I'm almost on emotional overload from all the suffering and killing that's taking place.

What I don't understand is how the rest of America isn't in the same place, emotionally as I am? How can they not be as emotionally battered and weary as I am from all the useless and senseless brutality taking place in their names?

What have we become as a nation when we can ignore the suffering WE are causing to others?

36. I heard this load of crap on CSPAN this morning:
There really isn't any fallout so far. You have to remember these photos are from years ago when a group of rogue soldiers without supervision committed acts on their own. These men have now been punished. End of story.

Some military dude said this - can't tell you who but boy did that piss me off. I expect it will end up being the *official* statement.

37. Remember, a fair fraction of Americans approve!
Even if one were to dump those in the White House, the majority of those who approve, and support this, would still be living right next door. This is what scares and bothers me the most. They are the problem. Not Bush. They are the ones who let the election get close enough to steal. Elections, I should say. And much more. They don't call the media on their bias and lies. It's them, we have a problem with.

That's exactly how I felt when I saw the pictures. These inhuman fools who are running our country into the ground and ruining us in the eyes of the rest of the world are using OUR tax dollars to do so. We may not want to, but we are funding this torture.

I want so badly to know how we can stop it. Angry? You bet I'm angry.
