it means either:
a) they were hunting nude (as another thread suggests) which is ridiculous, or

b) he was MUCH closer!!!!!

This is important, because if he was much closer then he lied about it, and he had to either be smashed, or terribly reckless. Or deliberately shot him. (which doesn't preclude smashed)
