Baby Hippo - Elderly Tortoise tsunami story - one year later

Baby hippo, giant tortoise mark year since adopting each other after tsunami

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) - The unlikely couple of a baby hippo and a 130-year-old tortoise were still together, a year after the hippo was separated from its family by last year's Indian Ocean tsunami.

...Owen may have been attracted by Mzee's round shape and gray colour that are somewhat similar to that of an adult hippopotamus.

The tortoise at first resisted. But the persistent Owen kept following him around the park, into the pool and trying to sleep next to him.

Mzee relented after several days. As the bond grew, the tortoise even returned signs of affection. They are now inseparable.

5. That's what I thought as I was going through today's Reuters headlines.
What's this? A nice story? It seems so out of place. Just like these two.

6. Kewl! They're in my avatar picture
I'm not a person that tosses around the words "cute" or "sentimental" easily. This story is both cute and sentimental, as well as a few other adjectives....

I'm pretty sure you're the one who sized it down for me, and for that I say "thank you".

Amazing how compassionate animals can be...goes to show that larger brain does not equal larger amount of compassion :(

Happy new years to you as well! :hi:

Little Girl Pens Book On Tsunami

Bandar Seri Begawan Inspired by the true tale of a hippopotamus that survived the December 2004 tsunami on the coast of Kenya, Santhi Roy, mother of Uma Roy (the fiveand-a-half-year-old author) approached Brunei Press with a mock up of the book they have `written' and illustrated together.

Brunei Press saw the book and thought that it was a simple, yet refreshing story, written by a child, and would appeal to other children. It could also be used as a tool to encourage close motherchild bonds with such fun yet educational activities.

We took on the project and together with the author decided to launch in conjunction with the first year "anniversary" of the Tsunami incident.

At the author's request, we worked out an agreement such that for every book that is sold, BNDI.00 is donated to the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Foundation Tsunami Fund. Each book costs BND6.00. It was launched since the first week of December 2005 and is available at bookstores and other outlets throughout Brunei.
