Watching Dead-eye

Dick Cheney break his silence on Fox, I kept thinking: This is what it looks like when a man who is used to getting away with covering up the truth finally has to explain himself.

He did a lousy job -- especially on the key question of why it took so long to let the public know.

He offered a host of reasons for the 18 hour delay: he was more concerned with taking care of his friend than about notifying the press; he wanted to make sure Whittington's family got the news before it hit the airwaves; he "didn't know for sure what kind of shape Harry was in... and you need to really wait and nail it down"; and he wanted to make sure the "complicated story" was given to a reporter with "some degree of understanding" (as opposed to the first reporter Katharine Armstrong spoke to who "didn't now the difference between a rifle bullet and a shotgun").

1. How's a man down in a gully get shot in the face by a bird hunter?
On the Fox "interview" Cheney said Whittington was walking up from a gully when he got shot in the face.

So that means Cheney was shooting pretty close to DOWNWARD at the bird -- like Elmer Fudd, if you squint -- to be able to hit Whittington in the face, who was supposedly 30 yards away, down a gully.

The horizon's never supposed to get above the end of the barrel when you shoot. And yet Dick's shoots a man in a gully in the face?

That's reckless. And thus criminal.

Moving on.

Check the sketch at the right of The Smoking Gun link below, showing where Whittington sustained his injury from Cheney's blast.

It's not a photo so it's not exact, but doesn't that approximation fairly depict a half a circle? And thus half the shot pattern? It doesn't take great imagination to complete the other half. Which makes for a pretty tight pattern.

Cheney wasn't 30 yards away -- more like 30 feet or less.

Maybe that "third hunter" could give us her guess as to the distance. Neither Hume nor Cheney explored her identity, however. Wonder why?

3. Cheney was too busy "taking care of" his friend? He didn't even go with
him to the hospital. After the shooting he went back to the house, fixed himself a drink, had dinner and was in bed by 10, according to his Texas "spokesperson" Armstrong.

And it's not the truth that was complicated to tell, it was the "complicated story" they concocted to "explain" how he shot a guy but "did nothing wrong."

6. Horseplay gone awry? Carelessly carried loaded gun?
I had more or less bought into the shooting at a bird explanation but now I'm not so sure. Maybe dickhead was fooling around, drunk on booze or even RX drugs and he pointed the gun at the victim and it went off. Or, more likely, walking with the loaded gun, to perhaps get a better shot at the birds and the gun went off, pointed off to the side.

The time delay was to concoct a story and get everyone on board. How low would the bird have had to be for the shot to hit someone on the ground. He has pellets in his chest! Seems the aim was maybe 5 feet off the ground.

So many inconsistencies...the 'witness' saw agents running and thought Cheney had a heart attack or, she actually saw the shooting as she described it. Wittington came up BEHIND Cheney? How does he get shot doing that? How many people were on the scene? Three, four, more? One or more people apparently were on horses (spotters?) looking for birds to kill. Almost seems there is a mystery person. Scalia?
