The most astonishing "pro-life" bumper sticker ever!
It was on a car in the parking lot: "ABORTION KILLS BABIES: 400 Per Minute Worldwide."

That's a hell of a lot of babies, so let's do the numbers.

According to a quick web search, there are two good numbers on the number of abortions performed worldwide: non-religious sites claim 40 million per year, religious sites claim 53. (The really rabid sites like http://louisville-catholic.net/hli_1.html claim that up to 500 million "children" are killed by abortion every year, but that page is calling for all contraceptives to be banned and claims that there is no overpopulation problem anywhere in the world.) Let's use the 40 million number.

Now for the 400 abortions per minute claim:

400 abortions per minute is
24,000 per hour, which is
576,000 per day, which is
210,240,000 per 365-day year.

How can people believe this shit?

3. Maybe that's including miscarriages too?
These people probably want to go back to the movie "Hanmaiden's Tale" and punish any woman who has a miscarriage as a murderer.

7. They believe it because they are ignorant fools with an agenda
They want to control women, even if it means killing them. And those that want to ban birth control yet cry for a ban on abortion are merely asking for more abortions, albeit the back-alley sort. What we need is more and better birth control, as well as more and better sex-ed (the comprehensive sort, not that useless "abstinence only" garbage). The more educated people are, and the more access they have to contraceptives, the lower the abortion rates will be. Abortion should be available, safe and rare.

9. Absolutely right. The way to lower the number of abortions is
to prevent unwanted pregnancies. Making abortion illegal won't do it; that just forces women to break the law and endanger their health. A more realistic method would be better access to and more education about contraceptives.

10. There will always be a need for abortion services
because no contraceptive method is foolproof. However, free and OTC access to things like the morning after pill will cut down the need for them dramatically.

Our only choice is to where these services will be provided. Prochoice people want them safe, legal, and regulated. Antichoice people want to push them back into the hands of quacks who will kill women.

That's the whole argument, right there. It's not about saving bay-bees. It's about whether or not you want to kill women.

16. All together now: therapeutic abortion
I know this is going to sound vicious.

I know this will make people blanch.

But I really, really want some of these serious "abortion should be illegal under all circumstances" women to develop an ectopic pregnancy. Preferably the most vocal ones.

Ectopic pregnancy is a "your money or your life" situation. If you have one, either you abort it right after you find out it's tubal, or the fetus blows out the tube and you bleed to death. There is no "God will save me" option; the fallopian tube is nowhere near pliable enough to hold even a one-pound fetus. (And just like a "your money or your life" holdup, where you can either be robbed or murdered and then robbed, the fetus will die whether you abort it or not.)

The best part: You've only got a 50:1 chance of this happening.

It's apparent that no reasonable person, when told "either you lose this pregnancy or your life," would choose to continue on a path of certain doom. But what happens after the procedure? Will they understand and accept that pro-choice liberals think live people are important too...or will they go right back out on the picket lines?

13. People who want to save babies have a lot of things they could do, but
don't. Each of them could adopt ten babies. Each of them could donate half their income to the care of unwanted children. They could lobby the Bush junta to stop giving huge tax cuts to the rich and use rightful, proper and fair taxation to support poor mothers and provide health care, child care and education for poor mothers and their children. They could picket/boycott businesses that sell baby formula and discourage breast feeding in third world countries. They could picket/boycott war profiteers that have promoted the killing of thousands of babies in Iraq, and are now plotting the slaughter of more innocents in Iran. They could picket/boycott the big ag dairies that dumped powdered milk on Jamaica and destroyed the local fresh milk dairy industry.

Lots of things they could do to save babies--without violating any of their religious objections to birth control or abortion. But they only rarely--and most of them, probably never--do any of the many life-saving things they could do. Instead, they want to curtail women's rights over their own bodies.

Hypocrites and Pharisees, it seems to me.

15. They don't give a DAMN about saving babies!
We've got a LOT of "pro-life" people in this town.

None of them want their taxes going for: public education in any way, shape or form even if it did teach the Bible, public healthcare, recreational facilities, social services...the old Department of Social Services building was a downtown department store. You've seen Brazil, right? Remember Jonathan Pryce's first day at Information Retrieval, where they stuck him in an office that was so small he only got half a desk? Fayetteville's DSS had just about the same situation--so many clients and caseworkers and so little space that everyone below supervisory level was sharing a desk with someone else. It took Twelve Fucking Years to get the money, find land and build the new building...the same fucking people who protested outside the two abortion clinics in town (they drove one out of business, and you'll never guess what moved in there...) also screamed in LTTEs that if only we'd throw all those deadbeats off welfare, we wouldn't need such a fancy DSS building. And when they sold the old DSS building to Advanced Internet Technologies--IIRC the largest web host in the United States--all these same people started screaming that obviously DSS didn't need a new building because a private corporation moved into their old one and they're doing fine.
