Dear Gov. Dean -- Congratulations, and …

3 January 2005 (# 29)

Just saw the wonderful news at The Hotline regarding DNC fund raising for 2005:

Dems Raise $51M In '05

The Democratic National Committee raised more than $51M in 2005, a record for an off-year and twenty percent higher than the comparable period in 2003.

Your leadership is a significant factor in the DNC success and, more importantly, the manner in which you have helped each State’s Democratic committee is remarkable. As Kos notes:

… when Dean goes on fundraising trips to the states he lets the locals keep the money. He's raising money for the state parties, which isn't reflected in these numbers. The state parties love him for it. In the past, people like McAuliffe would come in and vacuum up money from the locals and send it to DC. This makes these numbers all that much more remarkable.

One can only imagine how much more success you will have as more and more of our fellow citizens recognize the distinct difference in the DNC because of your leadership, and grow to recognize that you are not running a back-bench support operation for the Republican Party a la DLC.

If ever America needed to recognize that “center” as a political position is meaningless, it should be now.

The vast corruption of the Republican organization is obvious to even the minimally informed. The avarice, the imperialism, the willful disregard of all law and of our civil liberties defines the Republican neoconsters. We truly live at a time when the choice is good or evil, right or wrong, law or lawlessness, liberty or oppression.

It is essential that every Democratic elected representative of the people, and candidate for office in 2006, drive that contrast as hard and unrelenting as possible.

You have great champions of civil liberties, of respect for the law, and of humanity in the Democratic Party and they are the ones who need to be brought before all our fellow citizens and allowed to proclaim the choice of “America, Or Not?”

The message should be that -- If you stand with Conyers, Boxer, Lee, Feingold, Waxman, Hinchey, and many other Democrats, you stand for America.

Otherwise, the message should be that the person has decided that a totalitarian oligarchy that wages ruthless wars of aggression for imperialistic goals is the government they support and that they, along with Bush and the neoconsters, regard the American Constitution as nothing more than a piece of paper.

On another topic, I’ve been asked why I direct my correspondence to you and not others. I decided to use the convention of these letters to you for several reasons.

Firstly, it is an honor to be able to offer perspectives and suggestions to an ethical and effective leader.

Next, you are the Chair of the DNC and it seems efficient for me to direct the contents of the letters to you. It would be a waste of time to send them to Al From, for instance.

And, by composing and posting the information in a letter format, I hope, in a small way, to help others by explicitly stating that they can cut and paste any of the content and send it to whomever they wish to communicate.

What these letters are not is a critique of you or of the DNC, and they are not anything more than one person’s perceptions and suggestions.

Thank you for your successful and continued leadership,

Peace.

5. here is a good line for the dems to embrace ->
"We truly live at a time when the choice is good or evil, right or wrong, law or lawlessness, liberty or oppression."

now if they would just coordinate their efforts and get it together as a unified opposition.

7. Any idea how much the RNC raised??
In the same time period? Just wondering.

Great letter and I like Dean. You know he's dangerous to the Repugs when they spend so much time trying to paint him as "crazy".

13. The RNC raised ~ 100 M, so Gov Dean's achievement is even ...
... more impressive given how many obstacles he has had to confront, not merely from the neoconster criminal empire of Bush and the Republicans, but a bunch of folk within the Dem party working against him, as madfloridian notes in her comment # 12.

Peace.

17. That IS impressive...
especially considering the leaving state money at home. We need more work on the grass roots level.

8. Dean's fund-raising practice of empowering the locals is part of
the true paradigm of grass-roots power and organizing, and what will put us in the best position when the highly-centralized, top-down crime syndicate of this administration crumbles.

16. Precisely. He is reshaping the party and providing hope to every ...
... citizen, and you betcha he's got a bunch of folk soiling their pants(ies) ...

Because once "We the People ..." can start hauling all these criminals before appropriate tribunals and we control the White House, pardons will not happen.

Had Nixon been impeached by the House and convicted by the Senate and had to stand civil trial for his violations of Ellsberg's rights; had Reagan been impeached, and Poindexter and North been sent to prison where they belonged; had Johnson been impeached by the House and tried by the Senate for his Gulf of Tonkin shenanigans; had ... we'd have much less of this type of criminal behavior.

"We the People ..." must engage and be persistently vigilant, otherwise we're just providing a chunk of our weekly salary for criminals to commit more crimes.

Peace.

12. And even better, Dear Governor Dean.....
Edited on Tue Jan-03-06 10:09 PM by madfloridian
You were able to do it with so many people like folks here withholding funds. That is really quite good, you know.

A progressive group actually advocates not donating to the DNC, even though they praise you highly and say they appreciate you so much. That is only to your face, though.

Those who are supporting candidates in 08 don't donate either....haven't figured that out yet, really.

So it is really quite good you had the fundraising year you did have.

Ignore the hypocrisy, Dear Governor Dean. We have a long way to go. Many of us intend to remain with the Democratic party, and we will try out best to make a go of it.

We do still need the party structure, you know. Our country is in terrible trouble, and the breaking off to form a 3rd party right now will give the power back to the GOP....even though they don't deserve it.

14. Also Dear Governor, you must have pissed off Schumer and Rahm...
Edited on Tue Jan-03-06 11:08 PM by madfloridian
It is kind of a silly thing to be happy about, but they are always going around asking millionaires to run in 06, often in districts where a former Dean Dozen is making a 2nd run after a pretty good first one. So I noticed you outraised them in November. That is just not bad at all. You would have had as much in the bank as Rahm if Terry had not promised Virginia 5 million...kudos to you for honoring that.

RNC $6.1 million $32 million

DNC $5.4 million $7.3 million

NRSC $2.4 million $9.2 million

DSCC $3.6 million $22.4 million

NRCC $3.8 million $19.5 million

DCCC $2.5 million $11.2 million

And if he had not had to give one state 5 million, he would have had more in the bank than the DCCC.

And you were less than a million below Mehlman in November.

Not bad with so many withholding support. Not bad at all.
