of real criminals to mess with. I just had my bank account frozen because of a 15 year old default student loan. I know, my own damn fault but what happened to them being able to take only 10% of your current assets (i've had my wages garnished before because of said loan) this time they froze my joint account with my wife and are taking every penny we have in the bank. Once again I know I'm the deadbeat who let it get to this but for crissakes I only owe them 2500 but my wife and I are out the last 300 we have in the world not counting our upcoming paychecks. Anyone have a cheap place to live?

1. First - that's the federal government. |
|
Second, they can freeze it - all of it. The 10 percent only applies to other loans.

16. Hate to say it, but those are federal, too. |
|
Federal money provided to your school to loan out to students. Low interest, but has to be paid back to the feds through the school.

3. I am so sorry to hear of your troubles |
|
I know what it is like to be poor with no money and what little you have left, the government takes. They probably are only allowed to take 25% but the government fully well knows that by the time you're in this position you don't have the funds to get a lawyer and fight them.
Specially with this adminisitration, unless you've given massive amounts of money to their causes, the the repubs don't give a fuck about you.
Stay strong and carry on. Not being able to pay a bill is not a crime, nor even a morality problem, but leading an entire nation into a false war, spying on your own citizens, abusing the citizens of another nation, shooting somebody and then not reporting it such as fuck is!
You have my prayers-Mike C

4. If it doesn't sound out of bounds, |
|
what is owed on this loan? Could you work something out now to resume paying it off? Just asking if there is some way for you to move on from this point.

5. Is it possible that a collection agency bought the debt? |
|
Happens all the time. They buy the debt for pennies on the dollar from banks and then go after the people in dirty ways that the banks cannot. A sleaze-bag collection agency isn't as regulated as a bank.

As I've said they garnished me before and apparently were only able to take about 20-25%. I've been back on the books working lately (as opposed to being a broke business owner)so I figured they'd just start up again. If they'd done it 2 days ago they would have gotten 800 instead of 300 and my wife and I would be homeless. Thanks NY. I love ya.

17. I've got an ex wife that pulls stupid shit like... |
|
...using my name and social security number for getting phone service, pre-approved credit cards and such. I'm waiting for something like that to bite me in the ass one day like getting a speeding ticket and then getting arrested because there's warrants out for me writing bad checks in another state. She's done it about four times and law enforcement and the creditors won't do anything, except harass me and try to ruin my credit score.

13. They just got every penny from me |
|
I don't think they can garnish my wife. And I just quit my corporate slave job to go off the grid for a while so they can have their 300 bucks and they'll probably be putting us on social services soon so that account freeze was money well spent eh?

student loans. I would think they should have notified you in some way that your bank account was going to be frozen. Did they notify you or did they just do it?

I did a transaction yesterday. I have 3 checks out right now that are going to bounce. Don't know where they're going to get that money from so I guess I'll probably be going to jail for a while. Good thing I didn't run away from a hunting accident though.

|
to get this cleared up? I would call who you sent the 3 checks to and explain. At least they may not charge you with writing bad checks. This is such an unfortunate situation and happens all to often to people who are just trying to get by.

21. They can't notify someone that they are going to freeze an account |
|
If they did, the person could simply empty out the account.

22. Usually you have to get a judgement.. |
|
and then if you default on the judgement they can freeze the account. I don't know how it works on a federal load. You are notified of judgements.

I'm sorry that really sucks especially since it is only $2500--Too bad a payment plan couldn't have been worked out before they resorted to this.

without going through your bank? That way you can live and pay some of your bills with money orders or cash until you get this cleared up.
